For what it is worth this would be the way I would create a physical Blueseum for the club if I had the opportunity.
Whenever I think of the club the first thing I think of is what is best for the club.
So if we were to create a physical blueseum for our club what would be the format that would have the greatest benefit to the club.
In my mind it should be about stengthening the spirit of the club and it should be about the future as much as it is about the past.
I don't want a Blueseum designed primarily for 35-40 year old supporters to wander through and feel good about the 70s and 80s.
I want a Blueseum where those 35-40 year olds can take their children and where that next generation of Carlton supporters can feel inspired and enveloped/included by the club.
It should be about communicating the history and spirit of the club to the next generation of supporters, making them understand about what makes the club tick.
It should be a place to create and solidify support.
In my opinion to get full benefit a Blueseum must be something that is freely available, no entrance fee. The club should create it in a way that it does not rely on direct income (entrance fees) but in a way that creates indirect income (more memberships, keeping kids interested in the club and creating new supporters).
Now you could do an economic assessment of the future benefits of these things. If a physical Blueseum helps create a new lifetime member of the club that creates an income stream for the club over many decades from just one person. Multiply that for each new lifetime member and the benefits add up.
Of course other commercial aspects can be used, for instance directing those visiting the Blueseum to the Carlton shop at the exit (a trick many real museums utilise).
It does not have to be a massive undertaking either, the premiership cups a centrepiece of course, but the message must be the most important thing.
THIS IS WHAT THE CARLTON FOOTBALL CLUB IS
That must hammered home.
We are lucky; the job of creating a Blueseum that is uplifting and inclusive would really be a fairly easy task. One thing I have learnt over the last couple of years with the development of the online Blueseum is the incredible number of inspiring stories and people dotted right throughout the clubs rich history.
It will happen one day. It will be built.
Inspiring stuff, Jarusa.
I agree with your sentiments.
You look at the soccer clubs around the world, the big american baseball clubs etc, the american football clubs eg Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants whatever -ALL OF THEM have club museums.
A friend of mine recently went to the New York Yankees musuem and came back with heaps of merchandise. Every time I see him he is wearing the NYC t-shirt.
What Essendon* have done is clever - HAVE THE MERCHANDISE at the exit to the musuem.
I am fully behind you Jarusa on this and willing to help in any way.
And while we are at it - where is the statue of Jezza's mark (to be placed outside Princes Park)?
Even that Rugby League club Parramatta can get its act together and get a statue of one of its players. Are we saying we can't do that?
Finally, to end my rant.
Go Blues !
