In my opinion, change needs to occur within the board. And while I am an advocate of a complete board spill and a new direction, we need to be mindful of the financial reliance we currently have on both the Pratts and the Mathiesons.
Until that can be addressed we need to be careful with what we wish for.
thats a myth
The Carlton brand is worth more than the current sponsors provide.
It will survive in a different way afterwards.
Can you imagine the Pratts and Mathesons pulling their support for the club if they are not re-elected?
What are they doing there in the first place if they link their board positions with sponsorship etc? (they wont anyway because they benefit from the relationship more than the club does)
The Blues has a 23 million dollar debt when Elliott was booted out at the end of 2002. At the time our revenue was about 20 million dollars per year.
We now have a debt of 6 million dollars and a revenue of about 46 million dollars per year (almost 10 million coming from gaming, 10 million from memberships, 9 million from the AFL and 13 million from sponsors+)
So our debt has decreased from 23 million to 6 million in about 11 years. Thats a retirement of debt of about 2 million dollars per year.
Its a myth to believe that these Oligarchs are pouring in funds from their own pockets to keep the club afloat. Thats what they want you to believe....that they are saviors and that the members cant live without them...
I can assure you the Oligarchs on the board have benefited far more from the club than the other way around....They use this club as a corporate play toy...even though they may like supporting the blues.
So do the members and they contribute about 22% of the total club revenue each year. And buy most of the merchandise and attend functions etc////
A myth? It's how Carlton has done business for decades! It's why we are in the position we are now!
- Where do you think the $10M+ in pokie revenue comes from?
- How do you think we got to 50,000 members last year, with 5,000 of late sales coming at the end of June?
- Who paid for Judd's environmental role at Visy?
Would Jeannie pull out? probably not. She may not have been the greatest board director/VP, but she does love the club, make no mistake. Germinder? Not so sure! Same with Mathieson - and from what I know, he can be a vindictive SOB if he doesn't get what he wants. It's all about them - that's what you said wasn't it?
So you tell me, if they did pull out of the club, where are we going to find 20% more revenue - in a year! More importantly, where are we going to cut costs by 20% to cover that loss? The football department perhaps?

Visy gained more from the Judd junkett than Judd did...
and its tax deductible - brilliant! Youre not sugegsting that Judd came to the Blues because of the junket Visy perk deal are you? Wasn't the 1 million dollar club deal an the captaincy enough for the melbourne returning Judd???
THe 10 million dollars pokie revenue comes from the suckers who sit there and push coins in.
Every cent these Oligarchs put in they get much more back. (technically money from their commercial interests which is tax deductible and is invariable part of their company's marketing and/or advertising budget)
The gaming revenue comes from the venues that Matheison (Bruce) allows the CFC to run. He makes his money from the rent. the blues takes the profits for running the venues. We dont own the machine licenses nor the venue. he can farm them out to anyone he likes, or put out a tender. He has over 500 venues all around Australia.
So why has it taken almost 12 years to reduce the clubs debt from 23 million (2003) to 6 million (2013)? its going in the right direction, at least, and its serviceable at the moment (currently about 14% of revenue, compared to about 55% of revenue in 2003)
Sponsorships for sporting clubs, especially for the top clubs are fought over by the corporations....As long as you dont stuff up big time like have ASADA at your door, or keep losing, a big club like carlton wont have trouble attracting sponsorship deals.
We should be targeting 100,000 members to join up.
