Hilarious stuff, if you don't like it don't go and do what you usually do.

the issue is WHO we are as a people, what we stand for, what's important, our values, where we are heading and why etc.

If its about sport as a culture and sportspeople as role models, and corporate profits and shallow entertainment 24/7 etc then what sort of society have we become?

If anyone has raised children, the first difficult thing that a parent notices is trying to expose your children to balance and not just entertainment. Otherwise, just throw the piano and karate lessons, the school homework etc out the window and they will happily sit in front of the television or play computer games and Ipad entertainment.

Whilst citizens aren't children and can act as adults making decisions for themselves, the choices we have aren't as varied as they seem. Money and wealth plays a role, and accessibility.

It's not about forcing people to do anything in particular....

its about some of us saying to ourselves "these are some of the values we stand for as a society" We love the sporting ethic and the concept of a fair contest (the current EFC* excluded). We also value a caring society, that looks after people who need help for whatever reason. We value the people who are volunteers in society, the social workers, etc.,

Young people don't much of a chance to see that in this corporatized material jungle. And our future is highly dependent on what our young people are exposed to today...

And sadly the bulk of what our young people are exposed to today is short term thrills, mindless entertainment and junk food.

It's possible to escape this jungle but very difficult indeed.

Why have 14 of the AUstralians of the Year been sportspeople?

Even the choice of Adam Goodes this year undervalues the award. Shouldn't Role models for young people be police officers, politicians, teachers, doctors, lawyers, social workers etc rather than young one dimensional sportspeople that usually have some genetic advantage that when coupled with hard work as teenagers produces a magnificent narrowly based skill.

I marvel at Warne for example - one the best Australian sportsmen I have seen, an absolute genius on the field, but as a role model? I don't think so - my local butcher is a far better role model than Warnie - you should meet him one day and have a look at the social stuff he does outside his business. Just amazing how he finds the time and energy.

Yes Good Friday will go. And that will be it. Every day in Australia will look the same - and when it appears to change for some special reason it will be for THE SAME REASON - profit, materialism, cheap thrills and distraction away from the important things in life

Amen

Who says Easter Sunday is the most important day?

Easter Sunday is pretty widely considered the most important day of the year for Christians/Catholics. Anyone who went to Sunday school could tell you that, or a quick Google - http://forums.catholic.com/showthread.php?t=45696

Again, it's why I don't understand the opposition on religious grounds.

With regards to the Good Friday Appeal it can easily be integrated as per the proposal, may even enhance it - I know I'd never watch it normally but I'm sure it'd get a lot of coverage during the footy.

With regards to us needing 'one day off' - feel free to not watch the football and turn the TV off and do whatever you like.

What Sunday school did you go to ?
Sunday is a celebration but the crux is Friday.
Lol

Good Friday footy is a success in country footy. A growing number of leagues now fixture in at least one GF match. Bumper crowds being the result. Locals and Tourists alike roll up in their thousands (not hundreds) for an early season footy fix. It's not AFL, but who cares, it's footy !!
Attendances on GF are on the whole the equal of finals matches. What's not to like ?
Clubs are happy, VOLUNTEERS who man the gates, sell the pies, hot dogs, tea, coffee, beer, lollies etc are happy . Otherwise they wouldn't be there.
Players are certainly happy playing in front of big crowds, then enjoying a long weekend (farmers excluded).
Personally, I don't attend, because Good Friday is a work day for me, the same as every other public holiday in the calender year (Xmas Day excepted).
But that's ok because I love what I do, so I'm also happy.
Good Friday Footy ?..... WIN WIN !!!

But Murray, if families go to the footy on Good Friday when will they have a day to do something as a family?

The general point of 'over-consuming' is a fair point.

It's how western capitalism is designed and unfortunately breeds greed.

If people aren't in favour of GF AFL footy, that's fine, they don't have to attend the game, and they don't have to watch it on TV. Simple really.

As a general concept, this I agree with.

A game of football being a sign the four horseman of the apocalypse are about to storm into the MCG I don't agree with.

That's the nature of corporate capitalism, they want it all. They have Easter Saturday, Sunday, Monday and even the Thursday before.

There must be no examples in Australia, where the corporate greed model is suspended.

Children must never see a single example of a non commercialized, non corporatised profit based day in this country.

Why not have a referendum on the issue if its about freedom and choice! (Of course we know that almost 2/3 of Australians claim to be Christian. How many belong to the afl religion. There are more churches in Australia than there are schools)

Last year about 2 million Victorians alone attended Easter church services, just over 1 million on Good Friday.

I bet the afl, the broadcast media and commercial outlets salivate at those figures.
