Hilarious stuff, if you don't like it don't go and do what you usually do.
the issue is WHO we are as a people, what we stand for, what's important, our values, where we are heading and why etc.
If its about sport as a culture and sportspeople as role models, and corporate profits and shallow entertainment 24/7 etc then what sort of society have we become?
If anyone has raised children, the first difficult thing that a parent notices is trying to expose your children to balance and not just entertainment. Otherwise, just throw the piano and karate lessons, the school homework etc out the window and they will happily sit in front of the television or play computer games and Ipad entertainment.
Whilst citizens aren't children and can act as adults making decisions for themselves, the choices we have aren't as varied as they seem. Money and wealth plays a role, and accessibility.
It's not about forcing people to do anything in particular....
its about some of us saying to ourselves "these are some of the values we stand for as a society" We love the sporting ethic and the concept of a fair contest (the current EFC* excluded). We also value a caring society, that looks after people who need help for whatever reason. We value the people who are volunteers in society, the social workers, etc.,
Young people don't much of a chance to see that in this corporatized material jungle. And our future is highly dependent on what our young people are exposed to today...
And sadly the bulk of what our young people are exposed to today is short term thrills, mindless entertainment and junk food.
It's possible to escape this jungle but very difficult indeed.
Why have 14 of the AUstralians of the Year been sportspeople?
Even the choice of Adam Goodes this year undervalues the award. Shouldn't Role models for young people be police officers, politicians, teachers, doctors, lawyers, social workers etc rather than young one dimensional sportspeople that usually have some genetic advantage that when coupled with hard work as teenagers produces a magnificent narrowly based skill.
I marvel at Warne for example - one the best Australian sportsmen I have seen, an absolute genius on the field, but as a role model? I don't think so - my local butcher is a far better role model than Warnie - you should meet him one day and have a look at the social stuff he does outside his business. Just amazing how he finds the time and energy.
Yes Good Friday will go. And that will be it. Every day in Australia will look the same - and when it appears to change for some special reason it will be for THE SAME REASON - profit, materialism, cheap thrills and distraction away from the important things in life
Amen
