http://www.blueseum.org/tiki-index.php? ... an+Kirzner

Just following through on boynamedsue's additions, and referring back to Round 24, 1994 as a close loss to Essendon*, and the above name popped up. Of course, Kirzner later played at reserves with us in 1996, but we dont have details on site about how he came to us (or his player details, height etc.) From memory he came from Ajax, but was he a supp list player? When did he do his knee - before us or after us?

My most memorable Dean Rice moment is his last quarter in the '99 Prelim Final. Parko put him loose across half back for the centre bounce and he cut off the Bummers forward thrusts and got us going forward. Definitely an unsung Carlton hero from that game. Ditto Matty Hogg who cut a rampaging Darren Bewick out of the game in the third quarter and promptly chopped him up going the other way in the last, providing two lace out passes to Hamill and Whitnall for our last two goals.

Yep, Julian Kirzner was on our Supplementary List in 1996. He wore number #48. Also on the Supplementary List that year was Darren Hulme, Anthony Franchina and Shane Whitnall! Kirzner only played the first 4 games of the reserves that season (including a 7 goal haul vs Collingwood in Rd 1), and never played a senior game for us...

He was recruited by Essendon* in the 1993 draft at #36 from the Central U18 (where he was a team mate of Justin Murphy). He managed just 1 senior game in two seasons at Windy Hill. In his one game (yep, against us in Rd 22, 1994), Kirzner, wearing number #40, kicked 1.2 in wet conditions....and didn't look hopeless against the full-back of the century, as the 10th placed Bombers caused an upset which cost us the minor premiership :evil: . Bradley also suffered an injury during that game (hamstring?) which kept him out of the finals, and probably prevented us from playing off in our 2nd GF in two years... :evil: :evil:

Anyway, Kirzner was delisted by the Bombers before the '96 season, and we selected him (possibly under the "because he played well against us" rule!) in the Supplementary List draft (meaning he could only play in our reserves team). I'm not sure why he didn't play more than the first 4 reserves games that year, injury may have played a part (although I seem to recall he was back playing with Ajax in the Amateurs later that year..?).

The Pagan-coached Kangaroos picked him up in the inaugural Rookie List draft before the 1997 season (at pick #15). I remember he was kicking a lot of goals in the reserves for the Kangas (wearing number #48 still) early in the '97 season, was then promoted to the senior team, and kicked 4 goals on debut for them (vs Port). It was during a time when we were looking for a forward to replace the ageing Sticks and Earl, and I thought "oh no, don't tell me we let one get away". But he only played 2 more games for the Kangaroos before suffering a serious knee injury. He was on their Rookie List again in '98, but he played no more senior games.

Kirzner was a 188cm, 90kg forward. He finished up playing a total of 4 AFL games for 6 goals. He would have played close to a total of 80 reserves games from 1994-98 for three clubs. I seem to recall he had a reputation for freakish goal-sense, but a work/team ethic short of what was required at the highest level...

I'm happy to be corrected on any of the above!! It's based on my recollections, old relevant AFL Records, and the AFL Season Guide.

Cheers!

Thanks, aboynamedsue.

Back to the best games of the 2000's, we've added the following from 2008:

* Round 4 over Collingwood
* Round 11 over Port (the comeback, not the thrashing)
* Round 17 over the Dogs
* Round 21 over Brisbane

Any others from this year for any particular reasons?

Thanks for that HellasBlue, we have now added that.

In a 3 page article on our best wins for the decade, 2000-2002 gets 1 page, 2003-2007 gets another and 2008 has page 3 all to itself.

It was that kind of year!

Matthew Hogg was another of my favourites.

I think the thrashing we handed Port deserves a mention, if only that it was the first thumping we handed out as a new, rebuilt team.

The first of many, I expect.

How about the West Coast game from this year Blueseum?

Only reason I mention it is that we hadn't won interstate in years, and we hadn't won in Perth in even longer. Yeah the Eagles had a pretty poor season, but at the time people still expected them to come back from their tough start, and they were also ready to give Juddy an absolute bake over there!

Then we almost threw it all away, and then there was that run from Bower off half back which allowed us to canter away in the last quarter!

Any worthy additions from Season 2009 that we should add to round out the decade?

Ruining Richmond's season in round 1 was quite good.

The Geelong game - yes.

We had a lot of mediocre/less spectacular wins this year compared to 08, but I would take more workman-like wins over less spectacular victories.

Both added, thanks for the suggestion.

Interesting point in the last line there Adam. A number of our 2008 wins were added because of their come-from-behind excitement but also perhaps because they wre unexpected. Those comfortable nice wins that you just manage because you're better than the opponent in more places than you are weaker just sort of get absorbed into the year.

In fact the whole premise of the article really comes down to those games you remember - the tight wins, the comebacks. A season of 20 comfortable wins and a premiership might not provide too many nominations for great wins of the decade! (In terms of great 1995 wins I can really only remember the Geelong and Richmond wins as great highlights?)
