A few comments.
An arterial vascular problem is separate from a clot problem. If there is a localised narrowing in the artery, this will cause a lack of blood flow to the leg and hence difficulty with exertion and exercise, which matches Setanta's symptoms described previously. A clotting problem in the venous system would unlikely present in this manner and typically requires anticoagulation (blood thinning) rather than surgery. Hence plane flights are not an issue. A clotting problem in the arterial system is even more unlikely (ie zero) as this is a medical emergency in terms of hours.
Finally, a localised narrowing in the artery is unlikely to correlate with more widespread vascular issues (stroke, heart attacks etc) such as seen in older people, smokers or those with chronic diabetes so there are no particular mortality issues to be concerned about. Although a rare condition, the fact that Setanta has had it in one leg means that he was more likely than most to have it happen in the other leg as well. If the narrowing is surgically widened, I would expect the symptoms to be totally relieved.
I don't have any inside information on Setanta specifically, but though I'd allay some of the fears previously posted above with the knowledge that I do have.
..thanks a bunch.. ..so, in saying what you have.. ..this new problem is in his other leg right..?.. ..so was the first affected leg operated on in the way you mention..?.. ..such as, it won't have recurring problems/sysmptons and the second leg will likewise be 'fixed' off-season..?..
