My point is that Ratten cops shit for trying to implement a Total Football style zone because the players have neither the tactical experience nor the work ethic to pull it off consistently. Yet in theory it would counteract the opposition's tactics of playing through our slower players, of which there are many.
Ratten cops shit for not having a consistent gameplan, but if he was to persevere with this zonal style at all times he'd not only be accused of being inflexible, but we'd lose more games than we'd win at this stage. And he'd cop shit for us not making the finals.
I'm not saying that Ratten is doing a great job or that he's doing a poor job, just pointing out that it's an extraordinarily hard job and this forum, a tough crowd.
I'm just glad Terry Wallace isn't coaching us.
IIRC for the first half of last year, Ross Lyon copped a fair bit of grief for the way he had St Kilda playing (and it wasn't only coming from Grant Thomas), but now with a solid 18 months grounding and consistency in game style, the Saints are starting to see the results. He stuck to what he believed in amidst the criticism and the Saints players bought in to this belief. I believe Ratten needs to do the same, and who's to say that he isn't, because we don't know from the outside what is happening inside the club.
What I find 'ínteresting' (to use a Rattenism) is that over the past seven years the media have been very quick to jump on Carlton when there is anything wrong with the club, not to mention every coach that seems to lose a few games in a row (at any club), but I haven't seen much 'Ratten-bashing' (apart from his poor coaching performance against the Crows) from anywhere apart from these forums (in what seems like every post these days). Maybe we are so success starved that our expectations are too high now that we are a decent footy side not getting belted every week, but it seems that everywhere but here that the rest of the AFL community is realistic as to where we are at as a footy club.
