I think the point to this somewhat circular argument is that it's impossible to just pluck a name out of the hat as your favourite prospective coach. The whole idea is to put the same rigor into appointing a candidate as a top corporate would their CEO. From the outside, it's pretty obvious that Carlton didn't do that.
There's a reason why Human Resources is a valued skill: there's an art to sourcing, interviewing, and matching people with positions and cultures.
So, who on the Carlton board and/or executive possesses those skills? Well, one of our board members (I believe) is in recruitment. Was he heading up the process that eventually found Ratts the most suitable candidate? Or was Ratts just in the right place at the right time?
Given the shit the club's been through, we obviously can't afford to get this wrong. So it's good that Ratts has a target on his back. There's no room for sentiment, and if he's not able to demonstrate he's up to the task, he needs to be replaced sooner rather than later.
So, two issues:
1. Is Ratts the right person for the job? Answer: I don't think any of us know for sure yet.
2. Did Carlton act in the most professional manner when deciding upon who to appoint? Personally, I don't think they did. I get the feeling the club was so wounded after the Pagan saga, Ratts was as much an appointment based on emotion than rationality.
As with everything, time will tell. If we're as patient as Geelong was with Thompson, perhaps we'll be rewarded. But if St Kilda got ride of that idiot GT two years earlier, maybe they'd be in line for their 3rd Premiership this year, and not their second.
Pretty much sums it up mate... except that there is noone that will make the judgement or the call..... as things stand..
Also... Ratts is not the only boys club mentality problem...
What you find in situations like this is alot of backslapping and pissing in each othere pockets.. and where were at.. this is the last place you want complacency cos we havent done anything.... we still have a shitload of stuff to get right.. and even in a shithouse season where clubs are tanking or struggling to put their hands up and claim any kind of success... we look underdone and exposed.. and out of our depth...
but you can be sure clubs like West coast will come back over the next year or two... and melb with all their talent will also have the cattle.. what they do with their problems will be up to them... but if were not careful .. we will be trampled over in the stampede to success...we still have some space at the moment...but were losing time.
for every day you dont make it happen... its another day youll never ever get back ... thats how life has us lined up..
