It pains me to say but the club i love is a joke. We are just not a professional modern day club. It starts from the top. Sticks as a player was an all time great and one of my favorites but for the sake of the club needs to step aside in favor of someone from the corporate world with business acumen and who can maintain impartiality regarding appointments or dismissals.
As has been discussed at length, what was the appointment process that saw Ratts land the position? Surely a panel should have been established and at least 5 potential coaches interviewed. Who knows who would have shined during the interview but we completely shut that avenue down.( For mine,as far as credentials go, Damien Hardwick stands out.) If Ratts was seen as the best candidate following this process, fine, i wouldn`t be complaining now.
Why extend his contract during the season? Can`t we wait and see what happens this year first? Wasn`t there an option for next year anyway? It`s not as if any club will poach Ratts off us.
What was the process for appointing the assistant roles Teauge and Lappin gained? Not saying they aren`t good but are they the best? Does anyone think we have got great player development going on at the moment?
I can`t begin to describe our style of play, the players look confused themselves.
Why do we concede the opposition kickouts when we give away at least 3 goals from our kickouts? Why is our forward line always so congested when the oppositions seems so open?
If anyone thinks that Friday night was just one bad half of football they are deluded. It is a repeated pattern of failing and not learning from mistakes. It`s just been too long and is unacceptable.

The Greg Miller appt was a stupid appt.
It reeked of bringing in a name and not looking for the best man for the job.

You can be very VFL or you can become a prodessional AFL outfit that makes the right choices...

Good point...

Synbad ?? 101 is not really a cop out. its something people say when they hear people say something based on their perception and then it festers into "truth".
102 half the bombers side was drafted in the 2001 -2005 period. We got close to nothing in that same time. That group growing together and playing together make up the core. Our core of good players going forward are 18 -21. Long way back if you ask me.
103 It doesnt?

Certainly wasnt just one bad half of football....the most disturbing stat for me is the utter lack of consistency in our performances for the last 8 years. We do not play committed football. We do not do the hard yards. In short we are a lazy bunch of individuals who were led by a dinosaur and are now being led by a mouseketeer...We still have not got the formula right as far as Admin, Footy department and list content and development goes.

POST OF THE WEEK CHAMP

I wouldnt hold my breath though waiting for the answer

Don't know if it is. We're all in pretty much the same position, in the grandstand or in front of the telly, cheering when we're winning and trying to find answers when we're losing. I doubt most of us know what's going on inside our club, or have experience at working inside an AFL club, but we all shared the experience of watching a an anxious/disorganised/lazy/insert your own adjective carlton on friday night. We didn't play as a team on friday, it sucked, and we're all simply posting theories as to why. If someone inside the club knows the cause and wants to enlighten us then I assume we're all ears, but until then we'll go on guessing with the only information we have; watching our team play.

Most people do watch the footy on the telly or from the grandstand, and most people have thoughts on what they see. But what most don't do is put propositions based on just opinion. Opinions are great and evrybody is entitled to have one, but you dont need to know about what your commenting on to have one. SO hence the questions put by Spider, justify your opinions with some substantial experience in what your talking about. Totally reasonable question and in my opinion, POW :thanks:

I'm not having a go at you Baz, or Spider for that matter. I am curious though...

Do you mean to say that only those with experience playing or coaching at an AFL level are entitled to have an opinion on how Carlton in playing football?

or

Do you mean to say that if you're going to have an opinion worth listening to you should back it up with examples, to make it coherent and cogent?

Because the latter would lead to interesting and intelligent debate that I think most would welcome and enjoy. The former on the other hand would lead to no one talking about anything except what they do at work. We follow Carlton in part to escape that.

The latter is of course preferable. In terms of the former you dont need to have played at AFL or VFL level to know about the basics of footy in relation to skill or team plays. However you would expect a person commenting, NO not commenting actually bagging what takes place, to have played the game or been involved intimately at club level. For instance, I havent played at either elite level but I do still play team football and am involved with coaching at OMFL under 18 level. Inspite of this I refuse to bag those who are charged with organising and administering the big concept we call team football. I can comment on what I see but BAGGING which insinuates I know and those in the job dont is frankly quite pathetic. So to give themselves credibility lets see the credentials or at least hear about them.

Does that same logic apply to eligibility to comment on and vote for our state and federal governments?

Cuz if it does would those eligible be limited to ex politcians only?

I can just imagine the accountability then...

I will vote at the AGM about what happens at the club...just like I vote in political elections.

But I wont write to Kevin or Malcolm telling them what to do or how to do it better.

Thats the difference right there.

Are you serious mate ? Im more than sure "The Big Sinner" can fight his own battles, but i'll back it in that most of us that post, like myself, were nothing more than park footballers who just happen to have a point of view and like to express it.You cant be wrong to have an opinion, for that is all it is,an opinion.

For the record I have never played football at an elite level. What frustrates and disappoints me is when players handpass to a player under pressure, and instead of sheparding for that player or continuing to run to create another option, they stop and consider their job done. I know from experience in sport, work and life that if you do things to help others that you not only reach a common goal quicker and more effectively, you encourage others to act selflessly as well. In games I've seen where we've played poorly there hasn't been a commitment from the players to help each other out. It's an attitude thing and I hope it's being addressed by both players and coaches and we see a change from here on in. Go Blues

Totally agree on this, too many times have some players put themselves before the team and something needs to be done before those players start thinking that that kind of effort is acceptable.

Time to show some balls Ratts, make an example out of these guys and drill it into the entire playing group that near enough isn't good enough and only 100% will be accepted.

Go Blues.

So you just bottle it up for 4 years if your government is screwing you and take it out on them at election time. Fair enough. That's where we differ right there...

But surely your vote must be based on something, otherwise you may as well toss a coin to choose who you'll vote for. What do they say, 'perception is reality'

On the goal(s) which resulted from Pears running off Fev.

Firstly Fevola was at fault for not following him. Extremely poor attitude to think that he doesn't have to be accountable.

Secondly, once Pears had left the defensive 50, there was space for him to run into - our players had already flooded back.

I highlighted this issue after the game against Sydney. We simply flood back too early when the opposition bring it out. We hope to win the ball back in our defensive 50. Very dangerous tactic because if you don't the opposition get a shot on goal.

Why aren't we trying to turn it over further up the ground?

It's as though we conceed two thirds of the ground and defend as though the game is beginning in our defence third of the ground.

Why not have a zone further up the ground where we can force Pears or Rhys Shaw (in the Sydney game) to have to pull off a difficult pass or take a player on?

We allow them to stroll up to 50 and pick their option. Defenders would be filthy seeing no pressure or zone up the field.

Instead of the midfielders pushing back into defence they should be pressing up the ground to force a turnover or stoppage.

102 half the bombers side was drafted in the 2001 -2005 period. We got close to nothing in that same time. That group growing together and playing together make up the core. Our core of good players going forward are 18 -21. Long way back if you ask me.
103 It doesnt?

OK then, we'll just keep waiting with the patience of Jobe (Watson) and hope and pray and keep our fingers crossed that in 2012 when maybe we might be ready, other sides haven't overtaken us. In the meantime, curse on all who take a critical view of what's happening. She'll be right cos we're Carlton.....and you know the rest.

AGREE TOTALLY EFFES. Said exactly the same thing on Friday night. We need to build 'lines' of defence, not just everybody going into defensive 50. Once the ball is inside 50, anything can happen, including an unforeseen errant tackle that results in a goal.

But surely your vote must be based on something, otherwise you may as well toss a coin to choose who you'll vote for. What do they say, 'perception is reality'

My vote is based on what happens balanced against what I know. If I disagree with what happens..based on my knowledge of what goes on then I am making a considered decision.

The discussion isnt about making decisions...its about the right to bag people far more experienced and talented in footy in these open forums. If people want not to comment but blatantly attack the coach and the footy department...lets hear what experience they have and we can then better consider what they have to offer...thats the crux of the discussion

What happens with our pollies = what happens week in week out with selections, games played, coach presser etc. We all are privy to this. It's on display
How do you know what you know and how do you know its a balanced dissemination of info from the political media. Most of it is speculation because you're not there in party rooms discussing policies. It is no different with football.
