Three talls in the backline every day in the week for me.
Too exposed in height.
Don't go there. We have experienced a height deficiency since 2002, and now we've finally got them on our list you want to entertain the thought of 2 talls.
Got to be kidding. Watch some old footage, and then look at the number of super forwards in opposition teams who are tall and fast.
Have you thought about combining the strengths of height and pace and see what you can get.
At Carlton we have a plethora of candidates to play tall defensive role with pace.
Jamison 193 has pace and that's why he's our FB. Not flashy, not super tall.
Bower 193 has pace and doesn't get beaten in his unorthodox way, not super tall but a line breaker
Austin 194 has pace and is just being introduced to the seniors. Great reach, long arms. Creative
Thornton 192 has pace but likes to hold onto the ball. Good mark, not super tall. Creative
Waite has pace and an amazing player (also needed fwd) and has taken some big scalps and a line breaker. Creative
Setanta 200 has pace and has taken some big scalps. Super tall to mind ruckmen and gorillas and a line breaker. Accidently brilliant.
Hampson 203 is super quick and has all the attributes to be a KP defender (also fwd & ruck) and a line breaker
Bannister 190 has pace and is a good run with defender. Building up to the pace from injury. Tallish
Grigg 190 has super pace and aggressive line breaker
Walker 190 has super pace and aggressive line breaker
Hartlett doesn't have pace imo (could be wrong though).
We have pace within our tall group and to prove a point we often give Jamison and Thornton small forwards to play on (Medhurst and Williams)
Maybe too many negatating types of tall defenders wouldn'd be good, but there's nothing wrong with being super tall and super fast. If we had 3 Hampsons I'm sure they would be groomed for Key back, key Fwd and ruck.
4 talls / 2 tallB: Walker Jamison Bower
HB: Waite Hampson Grigg
or
4 talls / 1 super tall / 1 tallB: Thornton Jamison Bower
HB: Walker Austin Setanta/ Waite
There's some pace in those combinations.
Watch for 2010-2011: They know we're coming.
Hey we may yet win a flag this year if we get a good run with injuries in the last quarter of the season (round 16 onwards).
Gotta be happy with that.
