The point is it can't be the players having to be kept in control by the coaches. It shouldn't be like kids on a school camp.
We need the players to WANT to do this. They have to WANT to stay in and WANT to get the best out of themselves. It has to be seen as a positive thing, not a negative thing. Geelong have this, players have ownership of their discipline and their performance and that is why they have gone from a good but underperforming team to one of the best performing sides of all time.
Thats right! But at the moment they aren't so what are the concequences?
Well if we want players to take ownership, what about something along the lines of a vote of the entire playing list? Self imposed penalties?
But I would be hoping that either of these result in playing in the Ants, and not for one week. We lose games? So what. Something has to change.
We need to get to the point where if any player does this kind of thing and puts themselves before the club, which they have done, that the playing group says you're out for a month. Nothing to do with the coaches. Players who do this need to lose the respect of their team mates and want to win it back.
If you think players should be allowed to go clubbing till all hours of the morning mid season, well, they can, but we won't be successful. Not when the teams we want to beat aren't doing the same thing. They get paid huge amounts of money to be in peak condition. They have off season to party, this is business time.
