Jezza was lazy, apparently smoked and was slow.
In this era with the levels of fitness required and given his shill levels, he'd be a lot better.
It hardly bears credibility.
There is a classic after game picture (that I am sure is in Blueseum somewhere) of Jezza, Southby, Percy Jones and a couple of others all with smokes in mouth.

They pretty much all smoked in those days.
If you look closely during the medal and cup presentations on the ground (1979 Grand Final) you can see Mark Maclure with cigarette and the smoke billowing across camera.
Jezza wasnt slow - I remembered he blitzed a field in a 400 metre run during the "Truth Footy Olympics" would be around 1977 - so we are talking about the tailend of his career - but you're right if he wasnt a smoker he probably would have been near on unstoppable - interesting that when Jezza was appointed coach in 1978 he absolutely 'flogged' the players on the training track - but the players were so in awe of him that they did what they were told.
And if you want to know why during the early 1980's we were famed for winning games with a short 10 minute burst of about 8 goals in the third quarter - it was because most of the time most of our team was 'hung over' after huge Friday Nights and it wasnt till 1/2 time that they started to wake up.
