A leisurely 12 goals in a quarter.

12 goals straight.

Jezza goes nuts.

3 years before I was born!

What a great history we have. Snuffling out an Essendon* threat with a smashing like this!

From the Blueseum

Don't worry about it 'Zeum, some of the best / rest of us only post after a few drinks.

30 point win in Round 1.

12 goals straight'd be dandy.

Didn't see that game but I did see one years later when we kicked about 14 in a quarter against the Swans, I think it was. My mum refused to let dad and me watch the replay. In those halcyon days of only one TV per household, we had to sit through her favourite TV show instead.
Young Talent Time.
Dad was ropeable but he knew when he was beat. Mee too.
Jezza was lazy, apparently smoked and was slow.
In this era with the levels of fitness required and given his shill levels, he'd be a lot better.
It hardly bears credibility.

Great thread, but I was so hoping something from the Blueseum entitled 'Apologies, had a bit to drink' would be an exclusive interview with Michael Young, Val Perovic and Wayne Johnston as they explained their 1980 pre first semi-final binge drinking tour of Melbourne where they reportedly were so smashed they ended up drinking at the Richmond Football Social Club!

Maybe this can be organised...after all - Perc still believes it's the reason he was given the arse and why we didn't win the flag in 1980.

this game is etched in my memory ...

with the recruitment of greg kennedy from the bendigo league as a full forward jezza had been moved to the centre with spectacular success. jezza was leading most newspaper awards with the likes of neville fields (Essendon* centre) and bartlett, matthews and thompson.

the media built this game up as the big jezza v fields showdown and so we went to the game armed with a stats sheet to record the midfield dual. as the sides ran out we noticed that kennedy was missing, jezza instead lining up at his old full forward position.

i recall Essendon*, who was struggling back then, put in a solid 1st qtr but then jezza put on a display in the 2nd which had to be seen to be believed. in those days ch 7 would almost always show the last qtr of games on its saturday night replay but jezza's exhibition in the 2nd was so spectacular that they broke with their normal programming and showed the 2nd instead. it's such a pity that the footage is seemingly lost now cos it seems we 40+ types are the custodians of such a magic moment.

people recall matthews snapping a point post at windy hill cos it's part of that sensational 70s dvd, but sadly jezza's feats on that day are not equally recalled :hitcomputer:

Yes, and it seems that Ch 7 must have dispensed with or destroyed a lot of football footage back in the 70's. because I have searched far and wide but have not been successful in being able to get my hands on the video footage of 2 the most amazing games that I saw that involved the truely great champion, WAYNE HARMES..
if my memory serves me correctly it would have been one Waynes early games for the blues against St kilda at Moorabin back in 1978 and even though Carlton were beaten by more than 100 points ,Wayne still managed to take at least 10 of the classiest marks you would ever want to see playing in the back line..
2nd Game was the 1982 2nd semi where Wayne Harmes took on the hawks got about 14 quality possesions to blow the hawks away...
does anybody remember these games?

There is a classic after game picture (that I am sure is in Blueseum somewhere) of Jezza, Southby, Percy Jones and a couple of others all with smokes in mouth. They pretty much all smoked in those days.

If you look closely during the medal and cup presentations on the ground (1979 Grand Final) you can see Mark Maclure with cigarette and the smoke billowing across camera.

Jezza wasnt slow - I remembered he blitzed a field in a 400 metre run during the "Truth Footy Olympics" would be around 1977 - so we are talking about the tailend of his career - but you're right if he wasnt a smoker he probably would have been near on unstoppable - interesting that when Jezza was appointed coach in 1978 he absolutely 'flogged' the players on the training track - but the players were so in awe of him that they did what they were told.

And if you want to know why during the early 1980's we were famed for winning games with a short 10 minute burst of about 8 goals in the third quarter - it was because most of the time most of our team was 'hung over' after huge Friday Nights and it wasnt till 1/2 time that they started to wake up.

I,m glad you brought the StKilda game up Frank.

I constantly refer to Harmsey's game that day in the back pocket as one of the greatest marking exhibitions that i have seen.

To take 17 ( iirc) marks for a guy his height was a fantastic effort. None of this cheap stat marks but the majority contested.

Just on Wayne i always remember a grab he took in front of where we were sitting on the outer side of the Junction

oval. An absolute hanger!

P.S. That St Kilda game at Linton St was the day that Mad Dog Muir ironed out Dennis Collins.
