BRING BACK THE NOTCHES

Before people tell me yes I know the topic of riverting back to the circa 70's -80's Carlton CFC mongram on our Jumpers has been discussed at length on this forum before. If I can remember correctly there was mixed opinion and preference for both the old and new mongram was evident.

The other night I had a mate around and we watched a replay of the 1987 GF and seeing the notches again made me wonder why the hell did we rivert to the new 'modern' monogram? who's idea was it? my mate who isnt even a Carlton supporter also agreed that the notches version looks heaps better than our current version.

I think its again time to explore the possibility of going back to the old CFC mongram again. I miss the notches and the way our jumper used to look.

I think if the support is overwhelmingly in favour of the notches then we should start up a petition and present it the club.

How good would it be to have the notches back in time for number 17!!!!

Did the monogram on our guernsey from that era really have the notches on it?

They really only appeared on the 1998-2005 version.

I was reading a copy of a letter sent to recruit a player from the club back in 1928 last night.

The 1928 Carlton Football Club letterhead has a logo with the CFC and the monogram has no notches.

The issue of the notches on the guernsey has nothing really to do with history or tradition.

The traditional "CFC" monogram that was on our jumper up until 1997 was only of that style because at the time of its inception around 1927 that was about how far technology had evolved to mass produce a monogram which could be sewn on a jumper - the monogram at this time was basically hand cut from a pattern and sewn to each jumper - it would have been too difficult to hand cut the logo to match our our logo as it appeared on our crest with the Latin motto.

The correct Carlton monogram which matched our corporate logo was finally introduced in 1997 - because it could be mass reproduced correctly on a jumper.

Rumour has it that the current "circumcised" monogram that replaced the "notches" monogram was instigated by a board member keen to "modernise" the corporate logo. It was done during a dark period of Carlton's history, and was nothing more than a desperate act to look as though the committee was actually doing things. The process involved getting out a ball point pen and filling in the offending notches. No designers were engaged. No research gathered. Just a desperate act by a self important official. Last year I spoke to a Carlton big-wig and he told me that the "notches" monogram remained the favoured version, but fact was we were 'stuck' with the current monogram. He encouraged me, and supporters, to contact the big man himself and push for restoration of the "notches" logo.

Pardon my ignorance- but what "notches" are you all talking about? The ones of the 1926-96 vintage (which I prefer) or the post '97 ones? If the majority want a restoration of the notches, I'm in favour....... :thumbsup:

I contacted Stephen Gough more than once to compain when the monogram was changed. We exchanged
a few '' in your face '' type letters, and had some robust phone conversations.
My contention at the time was the club letterhead had simply been transferred to the club guensey, a point which Goughie eventually conceded.
Each version of the monogram over the past decade has looked cheaper and inferior to the previous one.

Why someone within the club would bring about this bastardisation of the club guernsey is beyond me.

How should a Carlton monogram look? As i have posted previously, have a look at any photo of John Nicholls
in action, it doesn't get any better than that.

Murraycray if you look on carltonfc.com under the Mamma Mia headline you will see a picture of a footy card with John Nicholls on it.

The thing is the mongram looks very much like todays version 'sans' notches.

I think the one you are referring to has a squashed pointy looking C in it, is this right?

Personally I think the 1 J nicholls is wearing on the CFC website is great and looks like todays version!!

Out of these two guernseys above-

I like the notchless version better on the guernsey as it appears thicker and a bit more streamlined.

The notch one is good on letterhead and in small things, but really as long as Carlton starts winning I wouldn't care for which variety they wear. They could even wear the M&M version if they want.

Out of the three monogram designs - the 1920's to 97 version is by far (by a continents length) the best one..it is the most robust and has the thickest monogram. ...but as long as they win I don't care anymore about which guernsey they go for.
