It has been on the boil for over 100 years. Born in the first decades of the VFL, and fanned into flames during the Great Depression and two world wars, it has broken marriages, split life-long friendships and started riots. It has been a focus of every level of Australian society - from Prime Ministers to pensioners, from Archbishops to barmaids. And it has been typified by some of the most controversial and passionate games of Australian football ever played. It is Carlton versus Collingwood – still the greatest and most enduring rivalry in Australian sport.

Fantastic article and dug up some stuff that I didnt even know about. :P

Encapsulates the hatred, dare I say borne of mutual grudging respect.

The part I like is no matter how bad we are going we have still managed to maintain nearly a 50/50 win loss ratio.

Take note AFL.

You cannot manufacture this stuff.

You can't create blockbusters.

You can't 'tell' fans that 'this is a rivalry round'.

You can't create 'passion' on the gold coast or west sydney if none exists.

This is real, proper hatred. And as Agro said, a tinge of respect for the relevance and necessity of two sides with a great history. Well, one side with 100 years of great history and one with 50 years of the same :-P

Great article.

Well, yes, 2010 would be nice for another Carlton v Collingwood Grand Final:

http://www.blueseum.org/tiki-index.php?page=2010

It would mark a whole century since they've beaten us in one.

This is what i'm talking about!

When I was growing up it wasn't StKilda it wasn't Essendon* it was those Collingwood scum! It wasn't untill I found TC that I worked out I was supposed to hate Essendon* and StKilda.....

I'd get around singing that altered Collingwood song, sticking it up anyone at School who barracked for them...man i'd start on the poor souls and never stop.....I was a typical Carlton kid who had arrogance bursting out of me and no one copped it like those poor Collingwood supporters...

To hate Collingwood was bred into me just like all my other values in life...

Great article!

Yes, fantastic, a great read,
but go to the bottom of the second page and read
"When Carlton and Collingwood were friends"
Really puts that article into perspective.

Terrific stuff.
I reckon we could write a similar article about Richmond!

I think we should try to get this 2 page article into the Blueseum too.....from "Warby's Scrapbook" in January this year; and copied from a 1993 Article in 'The Sun".

"Collingwood...We Hate the Bastards" ..... a bit over half way down the page.
