Been some confusion about the 100M penalty given away on the weekend. Was talking to someone today who was on the fence near the umpire and Fev when the 50 metres was awarded.
Apparently the order of events was this.
Umpire up the ground awards a 50 metre against Grigg.
Umpire near Fev does not hear this and calls Port player to play on.
Fev strips ball from Port player.
Umpire realises that original 50 was called against Grigg, then awards 50 metres against Fev.
Was told that everyone in that section of the crowd heard the play on call clearly and the reaction from the crowd was as you would expect.
Disgraceful from the umpire involved.
Not exactly what audio on the replay shows. Ump appears to be signalling play on when Fev is 20m away, so Fev deviates from heading towards the mark, towards Harding. As he approaches Harding we hear clear as day ump say "Wait wait wait wait" Fev looks back to him, then keeps going ".. 50m, it's 50m" .. Fev then reaches for the ball, apparently confused, but chose to grab the ball rather than do what the ump said. Ump immediately says "No No ... and another 50 too, you knocked the ball out of his hand it's 2 50s".
A harsh call, probably, but shit he's been round long enough to know that you have to listen to them cos they are savage on "time wasting" when you don't listen to them, even if accidental.
In that situation, the umpire should have used his noggin and done nothing further.
Soooooooooooooooooo many times an umpire calls play on after blowing his whistle to stop play and award a free kick, that opposition players freeze in their tracks, while the player with the ball has run off before anyone has thought to chase, giving him a 30 metre head start.
