What was our kick in tactic when Pagan was in charge

Who was providing the blocks over the past 5 years

who was our other target up forward over the last 5 years

What was our game plan that lead to us getting thumped by 10 goals plus every 4th game

We got rid of Kouta , Lance , Lappin , Kennedy and Maclaren
brought in Kruez - Brown - Armfield - HAdley and JUDD

Surely the rest of the team would have been so well drilled in kick outs under 5 years of Pagan that all Ratts had to do was refine them a bit

Youre kind of caught up in the past arent you???

Who cares about what we didnt do for 5 years the fact remains were still not doing them TODAY!!!

Have actually been impressed with Ratten. 4 from 10 but we could easily be 7 from 10. We beat Collingwood who are in red hot form, and remember we only really had one bad quarter against Geelong, a Geelong that has won something like 22 out of their last 26 games including a flag if I'm not mistaken?

Remember we have a lot of players around the 19-22 mark, but not a lot of senior players. Occe we get 50-60 more games into the bulk of those young players (i.e in 2 years) we should be playing finals.

Having said that, the process to appoint Ratten stank. It should have been more transparent and we should have devoted more time to interviewing other candidates.

We have a couple of problems,.

First is the on field leadership (apart from Judd).. youd think Scotland Simmo or Stevens would be taking the kick ins and not leaving it for a kid or the Irishman...
But thats something thats sorted out early in pre season.... not something thats up in the air 10 weeks into the season proper... its just so basic.

Funny how you want the irishman to be FB and yet not have the responsibility for kick in? I think that we have had 4 of our 6 defenders injured so far this year and maybe the set plays from kick in that was drilled in the pre season have changed because most of the players have?

Secondly the blocking and the shepherding and voice is a REAL concern...

I agree, but when it's boys vs men out there, don't expect the boys to win the battle. Judd said at the start of the year it would tack 2 or 3 years to understand each other and what your teammate is about to do. This anticipation is why the top teams block and shepard so effectively, it is not the basics, but a well drilled skill that takes time to develop.

and thirdly after Fev who is our second leading goalkicker and how many???

We traded our CHF for Judd (very good move) and Hartlett has been injured again so the development of our forward line has been hindered a little. He has rested Cloke and Kruiser in there to try to add something different. He has tried Carlos there and edwards has been given a go. It's very easy to say fix the forward line, but how about telling us how you would do it.

These are things you must have ironed out early....and havent been..

But if youre failing in those things how are you going to organise a game plan to improve the side properly overall???

Impossible...

All I hear is someone ranting and raving about a poor game without looking at the team for what it is and where it has come from.
I bet you didn't criticize Geelong last week after they put up an effort worse than Carltons did you.

Steve...???

i wont get too far into your post because ill just brush it off with how simplistic it is....with ust your fist argument.
"Funny how you want Setanta to play fullback but not kick in"

Well if thats not the most ARCHAIC post ive read on here followed by a whole heap of nonsense ill go HE!!!

The fullback kicks out????

This is not the seventies Steve.. this is 2008.. heading towards 2010...You dont have a long grey beard do you Rip???

Blocking and shepherding is a well drilled skilled and takes time to develop???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

yeah ok......

Thanks, you now have confirmed that you have no idea on how to improve the areas that you identify as being weak.

Why bother replying to a post if you don't read it?

My point is that if Carlos is going to be a FB and most likely closest to the goal square, then he should also be able to do the kick in. If you only allow someone like stevo murph or judd to kick the ball, then you disadvantage yourself by having to wait for someone to run 50+ meters to take the kick.

FWIW, I would have thought that the 70's you would have had a designated player for kick ins my version of the naughtys requires that every player has the skills required to take a kick in and the player would be criticized for not having the skill required to kick in as much as the coach for having a player with skill deficiency

And whilst I am on the point of you not reading my posts I said that anticipating what your teammates are about to do is what makes TOP teams shepard and block so EFFECTIVELY.

Synners why are you so critical that Ratts got the job, who would you have recruited given the choice was yours (excluding coaches that clearly wouldn't have taken the job AKA Malthouse)

Sorry mate.,.. but i thnk i understand the game enough.. i wouldnt think Setanta cant be full back if he didnt kick out....

Ratts got a gig on the back of Voss saying no when he was meant to say yes..

But Ratts also got a 2 year contract and the smallest wage of any AFL coach...

If you thought about that for a minute youd probaby come to the conclusion that those that put him in place wernt 100% convinced either.

Its kind of like having a bet each way....

ANYWAY... everyone has to start somewhere and Ratts got a bloody good talent list complete with the best player in the business... the best full forward in the business and a noted midfielder back from injury..

Young they might be but there is some experience in that lot too..

adter all Waite cant be caLled a kid anymore.

ANYWAY... we cant kick in... we cant tackle.. we have no linkage from defence through midfield into our forward line...
were one dimmendional going forward..
our midfield has no clue bar Judd..
There is no such thing as talk and blocking or shepherding.. (yes i know you think it takes years to know how to block)

.... so in essense Ratts is failing with his TUTORING... we did hear it was back to school over pre season..... what have they learnt exactly???

That if you raise the ball and get 13 uncontested marks in a row you might beat the opposition into submission with boredome and score a goal..

All that did was confuse us even more....

Were struggling with the art of playing football... except for some individual brilliance by Fev or Betts or Judd....

As a team in combination were all over the shop.... and that is evidenced with the forward line goald scenario.. Judds hard ball gets... and our kick ins....

Do yu understand when i tell ou that were going to murder Judd at this rate???.. and Fevola??.... because Ratts gets paid to come up with answers and he doesnt....

Oh yeah... he said "We see Setanta as a forward"..... wgich just goes to show how much feel he has for what his players can do....

It was interesting to hear Malcolm Blight say that some coaches are to focused on playing perfect football.

I know many on here and in the football world have torn Matty Knights attacking style of game plan to shreds but i seem to think it's the right way to go about it with a young list.

Ratts keeping's off and hanging on style of game plan as a cop out for when players are under the pump. Almost as if the players think hey, shit what do i do so they dish it off instead of thinking there way through it.

It's much harder t be bold and have the confidence to attack. Our first option when we have the ball is to look back, handball backwards, kick backwards and dish the pressure off to someone else.

Yeah the bombers seem to get smashed because they go through the corridor and take the game on but Matty Knights has said from the very first day that this is plan. getting the bombers to play bold football and then they will work on the defensive side.

Where as we play with a negative mind set before the ball is bounced. How encouraging must it be for our players when the focus is on playing this keeping's off contested style of play or we run the risk of getting belted.

You can attack with vigor just as you can defend with it to.

Look I honestly have no idea why these players are not learning to do the fundamental footy things, such as tackling, shepherding, going in for the ball etc. I think it comes down to the fact that we still have some very ordinary players in the team that are not getting better.

Guys like Carazzo, Bentick, Wiggo, Fisher etc, have severe problems in their games but they CONTINUE to get games and do not get told to improve or get dropped.

Again, I say this 1 million times that we reward mediocre players, and guys like Edwards and Pfeiffer who actually played a part in the Fremantle game get dropped. What does this say ?

I just dont understand it, I think some butts need to be kicked so the reality sets in for these guys. They are just no hungry enough for my liking. Simple as that.

I agree Ratten did not coach very well against Geelong, but it is very early to judge him. I will not do this yet. He is also learning the caper so I am not going to be harsh on him YET.

The players need a good hard look at themselves as well, if they are tired of losing etc, they can do something about it.

I clearly see sometimes that they make no effort to get the ball, when they should. This is what pisses me off even more.

I am tired of complaining about certain players as nothing gets done about them. They continue to get games.

Every time I think we are moving forward, get get dumped in the shit again. Injuries are not helping either as we have no depth.

I also think we need to try new things, and dont feel that we do enough. Eg Leaving Carazzo on Ablett all game when he was clearly getting killed.

You can't teach an old dog new tricks especially when maybe the coach is not respected or they believe in enough.

This club needs a proven coach. One with the runs on the board like Mark Williams, Paul Roos or John Worsfold

Each game i watch i can't help but think things don't seem right out there

I think we are drowning in BS with all this tripe about how bad we are and how totally doomed we are.

FFS analyse our performance at seasons end, where I'm sure you all get the chance to gloat how flowering pissweak we are and how crap our coach is.

Some people on this site will NEVER be satisfied.

Some people on this site raise question marks on X Y and Z and then dont answer the logical responses to them raised by other posters.

Some people on this site, seriously hang around for Carlton to LOSE a game so that can swoop in a drown this site in negative crap.

We are not the perfect team, but we are Carlton and I don't care whether you are member or a supporter, you really need to take a holiday from bagging everything that you don't agree with.

And please don't hide behind a love for the club.

DUC if you wanna be one of them supporters who claps your team off after a loss then good on you.

I for one am not going to sit here in thinking everything is rosy when It's not.

We only want what's best and demand the best for our club. Nothing wrong with discussing these maters that obviously are not just the thoughts of one person.

So after 10 weeks, if you are thinking that the coach should be sacked, you seriously have no idea.

Don't speak for everyone Melvin.

Why don't you start a new thread with a poll - titled After 10 Weeks, Should Brett Ratten be Sacked as Coach of the Carlton Football Club and see how that goes instead of assuming otherwise?

its actually 16 weeks and a preseason...

but no i dont want a sacking if it can be helped.. i want the deficiencies addressed... cos kicking in and basic game set ups are basic things for a coach ....

its not like we are asking ratts to win a premiership... just steps..

now did he say we needed the geelong smashing or something???

why did we need another smashing????

sure we can get smashed i have no worries with it.. but we needed it???

and i dont want to be smashed cos players dont do the fundamentals...

if we had a platform to work from and doing all the basic stuff.. and we got smashed by the better team fair enough..... but we are not doing basics... and that concerns me..

You didn't like Ratts last 6 games of 2007?

On the one hand you say kicking in is basic, and then on the other, not eveyone should be able to take the kick in.

It's either basic or not.

I am not privy to the inner workings of the club, but if he thinks we needed a hit around the head, then I am not going to argue with him.

Perhaps they were getting ahead of themselves and thinking that someone else would get the ball for them.

Did it appear to you on Saturday night, that they were thinking that someone else would go and get the ball for them?

Perhaps they were thinking easy peasy. Maybe they needed a reality check. And they got it.

We lack the basics because after all these years, maybe some of the players are not prepared to bust a gut to get from the crap we were for 5 years to being a more respectable team that is expected to win more games in 2008.

We have shown the basics in games throughout the year.

We have yet to sustain it for longer periods. That does not show a lack of coaching, but rather a lack of concentration and an understanding of what is required.

And if you tell me that, the lack of understanding is in the coaches domain, I will hit you.

There comes a time when it falls to the players to do what they know has to be done.

kicjking in setups is basic for other teams... and they have a plan and designated kickers....

For example you would never see Daniel Cross kicking the ball in for the Dogs right???

Or another example of someone you wouldnt see kicking the ball in is Blake for StKilda....

We havent shown the basics thats why leading goal kicker is Fev second is daylight...

and hard ball gets is an injured Judd...

If outr team needed a reality check to play Geelong i suggest the coach doesnt have their head right...

Look... youre an apologist... im a cynic... but hey!!!.. after 6 or 7 years im anxious to see us a good side... yes???

and if were not doing the basics im pissed off...!!!.. and the basics come from the coaches drillings...!!!!.. not from me...

Why don't you start a new thread with a poll - titled After 10 Weeks, Should Brett Ratten be Sacked as Coach of the Carlton Football Club and see how that goes instead of assuming otherwise?

i love it when you call me Melvin!!

I never said i want our coach sacked. I said im sure some have thought or questioned it at some stage over the 16 weeks and the preseason

I want what's best for this club what ever it's going to take
