4 years of being told to bomb the ball long and not practicising hitting up shorter targets.

Possibly true but that doesnt relate to skill aquisition at TRAINING

To some that is an early indication that he possibly won't make it. To me he looks like the next Hartlett. Has talent but no durability and only ever gets on the park long enough to secure his next injury.

Not having a go at the guy, and hope his body holds up when he comes back from injury this time. But at least Russell has shown he can get out on the park regularly.

Russell's efforts on Sat were good in terms of tackling and keeping MCLeod's effect on the game to less than the previous week where he ripped Freo apart.

There are 2 downsids to Russell's game

At times when he has had to go for the ball he hasnt gone hard enough and thats a fact not an unfair criticism. Once a player is labelled as soft he has that stigma for a long time even if he does change his game in this area.

Carlton have too many soft players. its a fact that Stevens , Houlihan , Gibbs, Russell have this tag. Talk to any knowing supporter and this is confirmed. And guarenteed these players would be told every week by opposition players particularly in the Josh Carr mould. To change that player needs to keep their eyes on the ball and not deviate off the line. A guy like Kreuzer has stacks of courage. His eyes are firmly on the ball and his body goes with it. Russell needs to develop it by peforming a few courageous acts. I saw Didak drop and easy mark on Anzac day . He dropped it because he took his eyes off the ball expecting contact. He is older than Russell. Lets hope Jordan doesnt have the same reputation as Didak has. But Russell has to earn that respect by doing it. 9 tackles on the stats sheet doesnt mean your courageous.

The second problem he has is he panics when he has the ball. To kick into the man on the mark tells me he is thinking too much about actually kicking the ball and putting too much pressure on himself. Hopefully someone will have a productive word in his hear. The right thing said at the right time might be all Russell needs.

The fact is turnovers kill ya these days..In the third quarter last Sat
Gibbs Kreuzer turn over in defence
Grigg Russell miss "certain goals
Add in Chamberlian's goal and there is the Crow's winning margin.

The question has to be asked

When do you cut russell from the list
IMO there is probably 8 to 10 you would delist before Russell so he would be spared the hangman's noose for 08
But if he doesnt improve these 2 areas of his game he will definitely be gone in 09. He would have had enough chances by then.

13 @ 76.92%
16 @ 68.75%

These figures dont necessarily translate into turnovers but they are an indication he wastes the ball. Now this is after 4 or 5 years of drills, skills acquistion and skills coaches. Is this a problem?

Russell is fast becoming the new Wiggins.

Its pretty simple, either your good enough or your not. I have watched very Carlton game, and when he turns over the ball it costs us so dearly.

He personally cost us many goals against Adelaide -

1/ Freekick in 2nd qtr

2/ Turn overs that cost us 2 goals

3/ Kicking into man on mark

These are not isolated, as he has done this in other games. As a young team these mistakes can be the difference betweem winning and losing, making finals and finishing last.

Its time we raise the bar, if you not up to standard you play with the Bullants.

i havent seen too much constructive criticism of his game or skills - what i have seen is sheep jumping on a rotting bandwagon trying to be cool doing what they think is the "in" thing.

criticism of JR was warranted a month ago - but the past 3 weeks JR has shown much improvement and for that warrants praise.

I am in no way saying JR is awesome and is the best player in the world - but his effort and development should be commended and supported not continually rubbished by rubbish posts.

I cant see why people are expecting him or us for that matter to be world beaters with such an inexperienced list - relax , sit back and enjoy the ride - its a bumpy one but as long as the boys try their guts out and play with passion and pride then we should be happy - you cant bemoan skill errors from kids this early in their careers - they need more time.

all we can ask for is improvement and right now JR is showing that.

Hear, hear.

Remember Rhyce Shaw's mistakes that cost the Pies a Flag?

That was back in 2003. 4 years ago.

Everyone saw it with their own eyes and came to the conclusion that he hasn't the make up to withstand the pressure of finals footy / pressure games. In other words he can't be counted on.

Malthouse showed faith and belief that he will learn from that.

Have a look at the importance of his role to the Collingwood team now, in fact for the last 3 years.

It could be a similar story unfolding for JR, and JR's physique is a lot more versatile than Rhyce.

Some people might want to check out Joel Selwood's efficiency from the Freo game as well. You'll find plenty of people saying he won Geelong the game in the last quarter. All I saw was him turning the ball over.

JR is taking longer than I would like. But he can look to his current coach for inspiration there. Ratts didn't exactly light the world on fire in his first few years. Even at his best Ratten was still vastly underrated.

JR may never be a marquee player for our club, but he's shown in the last few weeks that he has a willingess to play for his teammates, his coach and our club. The fact he is improving while doing so shows that he's worth persisting with.

It's probably only 18 months ago that people were saying Geelong would never make it. Clarkson reckons the Hawks didn't really get full confidence within their playing group until midway through last season.

Patience is a virtue.

Russell, and all our players, as pointed out already in this thread, have started this season with a blank canvas. They're learning a new style of play, learning to play under a new coaching regime and all while seeing the shining example that Chris Judd gives.

On top of that, the poll result is pretty damning in it's support of Jordan Russell. I know he made some horrible blues against the Crows, but he also did some bloody good team things.

JR is improving, and he is having a fair dinkum crack. Isn't that all we ask from our players, from Chris Judd through to Michael Shields?

As you would know keogh, I usually agree with your input most of the time, but I have to question your authority to make the following statements.

I'm a knowing supporter and I wouldn't use the word soft. That's because there's questions regarding definition. There's also a time issue here which needs qualification. Furthermore, it doesn't account the coaches instructions as to where to play and how to play (ie are they expected to be a receiver ala Bradley, or is there job to get it from the scrum and feed it to the receiver?

Quote:

What has labelling a player got to do with their ability to ever change their game?

And you can't call your opinion FACTS, unless you state that "IMO they are/ seem to be...."

I believe Russell has gone in hard enough in the lsat 3 weeks. In fact I have been impressed by the way he has increased his intensity, and awarenessand. I believe this is a result of match conditioning.ie the more games he plays, the more accustomed he is to the pace, toughness and the requirements to withstand the constant barrage of physical and mental pressure at AFL level.

They're shocking statistics that tell absolutely nothing. Murphy wins the ball in contested situations and is often under pressure from multiple midfielders.

Russell gets mainly un-contested possessions with little to no pressure and turns it over. There's a reason why Murphy is considered class, and to this point, Russell isn't.

As you said, it is an open forum. ;)

You're also clever enough to be able to distinguish the difference between constructive criticism and "out and out bagging". One of those methods of critiquing a player, any player, is welcomed. The other, not so much.

I won't patronise you, if you offer me and the mods the same courtesy. Sound fair?
