I usually have a lot of time for Elwood and having read through his posts on the topic, I think a few people have misconstrued what I think he's getting at.
Elwood has not categorically said that Ratten was not the best choice, the main thrust of his posts seems to be that it is the appearance of bias that is the main problem. Would Elwood have a problem if the committee was Swann, Icke, Pratt and Moulton and still appointed Ratten? I suspect not. He could correct me if I'm wrong.
The issue here is Kernahan and Gleeson. Kernahan has presided over some of the worst decisions of the past 5 years and has managed to avoid any skerrick of blame really - publicly at least. And here he is appointing the next coach. It does smell problematic but unfortunately there is no one else on the board with football experience at the highest level apart from Gleeson and that is a problem as well because he is a mate of Ratten's from playing days.
Elwood, I will say this though. Other posters have brought this up in that Bond and McKenna have not made the final cut of the Melbourne coaching interview process. That is a bit worrying. Either Bond or McKenna were not impressive enough at interview or Melbourne's process is entirely wrong and they're looking for the wrong things.
Bond and McKenna you would think would be in the gun for the Essendon* job but where have they gotten to? It would seem the Bummers are looking for someone else other than Bond or McKenna.
Ratten is fine by me, Swann, Icke, Pratt, Moulton would be fine by me, Swann, Icke, Healy, Walls etc etc would be fine....just not Sticks/Gleeson making decisions about a mate.
re: Bond and McKenna...take your point however I am sure I read an article in the HUN that quoted Swann or another spokesman from Carlton saying Bond and Mckenna impressed...it could be anyone else, I just wanted us to explore very avenue.
Bailey and Hardwick made the Melb list and Bond and McKenna miss out.??? reckon Sheeds might have the job based on the lack of opposition....with maybe the exception of Connolly....
