I'm not desperate for Ratten as coach. I think Bond would be great too. However I don't think it would be a mistake appointing Ratten. He may not have years of coaching experience, but I think tactically he will be a great coach.
He was an awesome centreman/onballer for many years. That is a positiion on the field where you really do see all aspects of the game and get a very good perspective of the modern game - unlike the old school back pocket (Pagan style). Ratts was a member of the blues leadership team when they were coming up with game plans themselves back in the late 1990s. I remember Parkin giving a lot of credit to the senior blues players for taking ownership of game planning and tactics back in the good ol' days. Ratten would have been a big part of it. Ratts seems to be a deep analytical thinker and I have the faith that (tactically) he will be extremely forward thinking.
I agree with alot of what you have said he was an awesome player who seemed to do better the tougher the game. Time will tell if he is to be a 'great' coach. In todays game he will need to surround himself with some great assistants and a topline reserves coach who will work with him.
This is as important as the appointment of a senior coach!!!
I would like to see Ratten (or Bond) appoint the 'Best' in their fields to assist him whilst also getting away from employing purely Carlton people or mates.
Some suggestions might be:
Defensive Coach: Glenn Archer
Midfield Coach: Anthony Rock
Forwards Coach: Chris Grant
Opposition Analyst: John Blakey
Reserves Coach: Peter Dean
Development Coach: David Dickson
Just some thoughts, anyone else got some suggestions on this??
