Anyone got any problems with that?

Ratts is going well so far.

Someone will, Verbs. Guarantee it.

Ratts has to get the job. He has really swayed my mind with his public displays the past week. Even though his image isn't as marketable as Voss, he is selling the youth and Carlton spirit image very well.

The questions we would have to wait and see answered are who would his assistants be? Would he change from the current assistants? Would he have the say on the senior players remaining on the list? Will Mitchell remain as a Carlton Reserves Coach?

Ratts might not be as marketable, but as you mentioned, he has spoken well when the microphones have been stuck in front of him. In less than two weeks he's already showing a capacity to get a message across that, if nothing else, gives us supporters hope and an understanding of where the club is heading, and how it plans on getting there.

Pagan's cliches were fun, for a little while, but ultimately we just want something tangible being said.

But if Ratten really is the best option then so be it.

Yes I totally agree. Pagan was such a huge Carlton figure, a genuine colossus striding throughout Carlton’s history and he was a total failure. We need someone far removed from Carlton's historically failure ridden culture, someone from another club with recent success.

Hey I've heard Dean Laidley's out of contract at the end of the year. Surely a coach coming from such a strong successful culture like the Kangaroos would do wonders for the club :)

At last the charade is over. Vossy was the most unqualified candidate for a coaching position that I had ever seen - yet the media loved him and were pushing his barrow at any chance. How many of these so-called experts now have to eat their words?

In my opinion, I don't believe that Vossy will ever be senior coach at a football club. He loves the spotlight in the media too much and could never be subserviant as an assistant coach. No player will ever contemplate going straight into coaching without an apprenticeship. There are now so many better credentialled people out there now that have done the hard yards.

Ratten has always been my first choice and I hope he gets it. If not Ratten then Bond. If not Bond then Harvey. No one else really...

Apart from Mallee forgetting to add since Tim Watson to his post, he was right. It was great to see the Voss bandwagon breakdown and the wheels totally fall off it because his heart wasn't in it. We can't bear another coach failing after he came with a huge reputation and an equally huge price tag.

Why aren't we after Chris Bond?

We don't need a hugely marketable coach to sell memberships for a club like Carlton. Clarkson, Lyon and Craig aren't the biggest names in the AFL, but are good coaches who are performing well and have the respect of their players.

I wish we had Ross Lyon after watching his impressive interview on Footy Classified on Monday night.

Chris Bond, who reportedly ticked every box as the "process" progressed, was deemed unlucky to miss out. While Voss is yet to declare himself a genuine candidate, the massive temptation to move into senior coaching is proving difficult to resist.

Has much as we all hate to admit it, Wilson is usually pretty close to the money. If there was a process, and Bond ticked every box and was only missing out to Voss, then it would suggest as other in this thread have that Bond is now top of the list.

Yep

Voss comes across as arrogant

If he wants to coach a senior AFL club, do the hard yards as an assistant

So what does he do in 08. Be an assistant or work with Huddo and co on the box

I am so glad he wont be coaching us in 08

There are so many better qualified coaches out there

And I wonder about the bending assault charges

I dont know, but there is something about Voss that I dont like

On footy classified he was oh so confident and had his assistants ready to go in 08

Wonder how they feel now

And of course there is the media frenzy and how they have played their part in all this bullshit

Very happy that Voss is out of the mix. Will be a good coach one day. From a marketing perspective, any new coach is good. Love Ratten, but the club must complete a serious assessment of the candidates. A short short-list of Ratten, Bond and McKenna will do me; all have strong Carlton connections - Ratten and Bond obviously having played for the club and Guy McKenna having had a very strong and close connection to Earl Spaulding's hip and shoulder in 95 that he almost wore the navy blue as well. :?

So he's a coach that's just taking it one week at a time?

That's a novel concept.

I'd like to see a proper interview process followed and some more applicants interviewed.
I cooled on Voss but he still had some positives in his favour.
I dont mind Brett Ratten but I'd still like to hear what Bond, McKenna, and others have to say and what they can offer.
I'd like to think Ratten earned the job rather than got it by default because Voss lost interest after being swayed by Leigh Matthews...
When I read that Ratts is Stephen Kernahans preferred choice which means thats he automatically become Dick Pratts first choice then I start to have concerns.....We almost need a independent panel to interview and make recommendations to Swann and Icke....Sticks, Gleeson etc should be out of the loop and not be aligning themselves with mates...how can you make proper judgements with mates interviewing mates?

I think this whole saga has reflected poorly on Voss and if the club did offer him the job as claimed thats very ordinary. Voss has 'club teased' for months now and began wavering last week with his 'im only going to coach if Im 100% committed' comments. These comments laid the ground work for him pulling out. Jason Dunstalls comments were very prescient as he basically suggested Voss either put up or shut up. Voss has a very big ego and seems very comfortable with himself and Im not nearly as impressed with him as I used to be.

Personally Im glad he's not coaching-he needs more time out of the game and to be in a different environment for a while. I ve got no opinion on whether he will be a good coach. Maybe he will maybe he wont but Im glad he is not coaching Carlton.

Totally agree EB1. The "merit principle" must apply. Kernahan and Gleeson must be removed from the process, especially Sticks who has shown himself not up to the task over the past 5 years (not withstanding his efforts in luring Dick Pratt back to the fold)!

I just think people should relax...

we don't know that much officially about the process. We don't know who is playing what type of role on that Selection Committee. We've based our distrust of Gleeson on plenty of rumour and innuendo over what happened with Pagan at the end of last year... but I honestly don't think that any of us really and truly understand what went on there. Maybe Gleeson stuffed it up, maybe he didn't. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt until I see evidence that clearly links him to any form of mishandling of the matter.

Sticks? Do we honestly know what role Sticks will play in this process? I don't rate the decisions Sticks has made over the years, but do we honestly know what role he is currently playing? Is he the one making the decisions, is he an equal on the panel, is he providing the footy experience, is he playing devil's advocate? Who knows...

I could understand the questioning of our decision making last year. We had Malouf and Smorgon in charge for heaven's sakes. But this year, it seems we have put people in to our administrative positions who have great experience and poise, and here we still are sitting around pretending that we (on TC) know the best way to handle all of this. Well guess what guys? Whilst I have doubts over Sticks, I'd still rather have him, Bear Gleeson, Swann, and Icke selecting a coach then leaving it up to a random sample of four of our posters to make the decision.

Look, I admire the people on here that are losing their hair or going grey over this decision. It shows their blood beats Blue. But for once, sit back, relax, and leave it up to the Club to make a decision. When they've made that decision, they can explain how they got there and why they chose the path they did. Then all of you should just sit back, take a deep breath, and keep your fingers away from the keyboard. Because no matter what process they followed, it will be at least 2-3 years before we can judge whether these guys made a good call or not, and typing out posts decrying the selection process on the day the new senior coach is appointed is not doing anyone any favours.

Meanwhile, I might run a market. Who will be the first TC poster to call for a petition to remove Kernahan following the appointment of the new coach?

Just settle down, relax, and forget about all of this. It will work out fine you know

Ratts met Melbourne today.

Chris Bond still on our radar - seems to be in front of McKenna at least.

But Ratts still the favourite.

Personally....I hope he's our new Coach.....until he shows me otherwise....

Read the previous page of this thread and you will get your answer. This is the last time that I do the washing up for you...
So which one was the last time?! This duplication was not intended, but it is funny ...

Seriously, I just went back and missed it! I saw the SammyJ suggestion but who was the "someone else"?

Sorry, it was a different thread. My bad. :(

To be fair on Voss who i believe was on the radar for at least 2 of the Melbourne Clubs the Blues being the front runner.

I think his decision to back down may have been more to do with family than anything else as i believe his wife was a very strong influence due to not wanting to move out of Brisbane and relocate the kids ect ect.

I am guessing he will be looking now at the Brisbane gig unless he can turn influence the family to make the big move out of Brisbane.

This will possibly mean he wont be taking any Assistant role down outside of Melbourne either which will prob mean he will remain in his current role in the media

Fantastic post Molly.

Like you I'm a bit concerned about both Kernahan AND Gleeson being on the coaching selection panel. But in reality my concern is based on nothing more than innuendo and gut feel.

While I would feel more comfortable if it was only one of either Kernahan or Gleeson forming a three man panel with Swann and Icke, I'm guessing that all four men on the panel want what is best for Carlton. If they botch it up it won't be because a couple of the panellists just wanted a mate to get the job.

For those worried about the marketing aspect, Ratten is clearly the best option for Carlton on that front, especially now that Voss is definitely out of the picture. Already we've seen he is able to clearly inform the fans and public what he expects from his players. Moreover, he sells his message (so far, at least) in a way that is designed to give supporters hope. Not the excuses that we became used to with Pagan.

Whatever happens, whoever coaches us next year, I have no reason to believe that Sticks, Gleeson, Icke and Swann will not do anything but act in the best interests of the club while researching and making their decision/recommendations.
