Process
WHat process are we following in our coaching recruiting? Same old Carlton crap, let's get a big name without any process at all. What will we get? A man with no coaching experience who thinks Fraser Gehrig is a great bloke to have a drink with, who gets himself embroiled in assualt charges, who is so arrogant he thinks experienec is for lesser men. What will we get with him? A few similarly inexperienced mates from Brisabane and a genius like Frawley.
Are we even going to talk to anyone else? Chris Bond, who was a close second to Lyon in the Saints selection process (the type of process we should have but never will because we are Carlton) won't talk about coaching until the end of the season. Are we even going to talk to him? Or don't we do that because we are Carlton and high profile is all we want.
And who is the genius presiding over this debacle? Sticks of course, great footballer, great Carlton man, terrible decison maker. He wanted O'Reilly because we needed a "big bastard" (even if that was a broken down hack), he wanted Britts then wanted him sacked, wanted Pagan and then wanted him sacked, -probably helped with Ackland's recruitment. Why is he involved at all in this? He wanted Pagan out then in, and in effect engineered the rift with Mitch and failed to solve it by refusing to allow Mitch to be sacked.
I have had a gutful of amateur hour at Carlton. If we go through a process and get the best, if that is Voss, then okay. But everything points to another half baked old fashioned out of touch bad decision by the bad news Blues.
Mark H or Stephen M please tell us we are going to get the best by searching and interviewing widely. Please tell me we are not going to just appoint a name. Please tell me we have decision makers at the club who actually remember the Tim Watson experiment. Just when I think things are looking up we appear to want to yet again show how dumb we are and how incapable of learning a lesson.
Great post Gerry. I hope Josh is right and they are interviewing widely and professionally.
Completely agree with all those pointing out the comparison with 1965. Voss joining the club would be a boon for us re image, marketability etc etc.
I certainly don't have a problem with having an untried coach either. How many premiership coaches of the last 10 years have coached at senior level elsewhere first? Matthews only. Every other premiership coach was at their first club as coach.
Hiring Voss would also show the footy world that the club that had the most attraction to the most fancied prospective coach in years was Carlton. That's certainly worth something.
And yet...
Is it just me or does anyone else have a nagging doubt about Voss? Don't get me wrong - great player, great leader etc etc.
It's just that...
...well...
...I guess what I'm trying to say is...
...every time I listen to Michael Voss talk about football (or anything really) I can't help but feel that he might be just a little bit thick.
