The real short coming of the Draft is the unneccessary pressure placed on the kids. Expectations are that you are bound for the scrap head before you are 21 rather than acknowledge that the Kouata's, Rattens of the world did nothing until the were 22/23.

Most would know that Doull and Tuck played something like 70 Reserves games each before becoming regulars but i am sure that there were plenty of others who who have been allowed to learn their trade in the lower ranks free of the personal insults and pressure thrown at the kids of today ala Jordan!

It is very easy to be ashamed at the treatment hand out to the young players. This is one case in point!

Jordan Russell will be a good player when he is ready.

There is no point in annihilating the kid yet...if he has gone home or not.

My only issue with this situation is WHY?

I am concerned that the morale at the club is not benefiting the JK"s or the JR"s.

I hope that there is a cafe culture at the club that protects these teenagers.

It would be really hard to leave home and be put in the spotlight straight away.

It is a lot easier to identify talent these days. The game has changed completely from when Doull etc were coming into the system. A player needs certain attributes to succeed. We don't have the luxury of leaving someone on the reserves list for 4 years while we buy an interstate champion to top up the list.

However, there are exceptions to the rule and those players find themselves lingering on a list for fear they'll turn out to be Scott West like in their progress.

Blokes like Carrazzo, Bentick, Blackwell all have a certain something that hasn't been blaringly obvious to the naked eye. They play a role that a side like ours could use even though they don't have the skill, size and stamina/speed of a Russell.

I see a role for all those three before Russell, atm.

Can we stop pretending that he has gone home. As per the training report he is still in Melbourne. There simply is no problem to speak of here!!!

Different system now.
Back then about 50 players on the list. 18yo kids in the U19s were happy get some boots and a sportsbag. Now an 18yo kid gets $50K plus about $3K per senior game. When you're paying out big bucks, you want to see something.

I read one comment over at CSC describing one of our teenagers as "a disgrace to the navy blue jumper".

Your definitely not an idiot for having an opinion. But you may be an idiot for having the wrong opinion.

I think you are being unreasonably tough on JR. Let's assess the facts. He has played less than 20 games. He has been given a bunch of very tough tasks this year and has passed most of them (incl. Preseason Comp). He is only in his 3rd year of footy with the Blues and is only 20 years old. He is fast, skillfull and big. He has a good head on his shoulders and is a good learner. Give him a fair go before you critism the @#$%&! out of him. He has much more upside than Bentick and I'd be happy to take a wager that he'll play more AFL games than Bentick and have more impact.

I don't blindly support any player that wears the blues jumper. There are at least 5 guys that I would delist at this point. But if we let JR go, that would be a big mistake. Let's take this one up in 2 years time and see who was right. If you turn out to be right, I'm the idiot. But I very much doubt it

He was at training this morning and he is going to join the boys for an afternoon of paintball. Seems along way from Adelaide at this stage.

I'm sorry I caused so much commotion. I really am, but what I conveyed was from a source that I really thought was reliable - a relative.

I am glad I am wrong, because I like Jordan and I really want him to do well.

Accept this post as an unconditional apology, an absolute unconditional apology, but I really thought it to be true and from a good source. I suppose you don't really know unless you get it from the horse's mouth, and I didn't.

Great to hear the rumour was off the mark. JR is trying hard and the results are showing on the park in the way he's getting to more contests and gaining the courage to take the ball and run with it, where in the past he has been visably uncomfortable in possesion and just looked to get rid of it as quickly as possible. He was missing home but he's commited to the club and is busting his arse to live up to expectation and as long as he continues to improve, that's all we can ask of him as far as I'm concerned.
