Well that little snippet of information puts everything into perspective.
I am there for Good Friday footy - regardless of who is playing but it would be great if it was us.
A heathen I may be

We have played in the past on the Thursday night haven't we? I think one of Matty Lappins first games for us was against Essendon* on Easter Thursday night when he took mark of the year. My memory is a bit sketchy on it.

How do you think that would go? People have the day off the next day, plenty wont be away etc. Would attract a massive tv audience I would imagine.

As an evangelical Christian, I have nothing wrong with people doing things on Good Friday, including footy. Christian doctrine emphasises the power of Christ's sacrifice on the cross EVERY day - Good Friday is simply the day that he was crucified. Yes it is important, but because it is so important, I reflect on the cross every day, not just for 1 day throughout the year.

My main argument against it is that people are less likely to go because they've gone away for the long weekend. Deano, the interstate argument suits people like you and I who might do it, but most Carlton supporters live in Melbourne, that's a cold hard fact and I doubt that just because interstaters could get down there for the game that that would offset the numbers who would not go because they've gone away for the long weekend.

The other thing I'd point out, tubbs, is that in the USA, Good Friday is NOT a public holiday...

that point is moot completly though. if people go away for the weekend then they are doing just that, so the wouldn't be able to see us play if the game was on a friday, saturday sunday or monday.

i dont see all afl games over easter not being played because more people are likley to be away.

i'd be interested to see the average attendances over the easter rounds compared with non easter rounds over the last few years.

i doubt there would be a drop of more than say 10%
if the games a 'big' one then i'm guessing that the current form of the two teams will be more of a factor.
i cant see this game ever getting close to ANZAC day, but you'd imagine it could still get pretty big especially if both clubs peak around the same time.

I reckon night game on Good Friday would be the go. For the religious amongst us all the ceremonies would be over in the afternoon, and we already play on Easter Sunday, and I am sure my father told me that way back the Vic/NSW Shield match used to start on Christmas Day, so it is not like there is no precedent for playing footy on a significant Christian day.

And as for visiting families, how about in the morning or on the other 364 days of the year. I would have thought Good Friday wasn't a big family visit day because its symbolism in sombre rather than celebratory.
And let's face it, we are predominantly a secular society these days.

While we're at organising that we should demand a game next year at the Dome in the evening on Anzac day against Richmond and push for alternating teams at the G and Dome in subsequent years. The Anzac day thing really, really annoys me. It is not a Coll/ Ess tradition, teams have always played on Anzac day. I can remember going to PP as a kid in 1968 to see the Blues and Bombers, we kicked 1 goal!!! My father fought in WW2 why is it that he is prohibited from seeing his team ever play on Anzac day!!!

Give it a go and see what happens.

Okay, so in reality, it probably is a mickey mouse attempt to create our own blockbuster, but at least we're in there gaving a go instead of letting some other club's administration grab the initiative for a change.

Forget the potential outcome, at least just enjoy the fact the club is trying something instead of getting splinters in it's arse.

I in Synbad's camp on this one.

There's 2days in the year when things switch off, Xmas and Good Friday. I just can't understand people who complain that there's nothing on. Its a good day to switch off the telly and spend the day with family. No shopping, no Lost or Desperate Housewives, just you and your family.

Just sit and talk, go for a picnic, have a barbie, get some fish n chips.

Its a very sad indictment on society that people are petrified of spending one day without artificial stimulation.

If the footy was on, I'd tape it and watch on Saturday

I don't know why but I'm an Eastern Catholic (Melkite) and like the Orthodox Christians our Good Friday mass starts 7pm and goes for 2-3 hours with a street procession carrying a wreath of flowers.

Getting off topic here but thats prime footy time as well.

The Coptics Good Friday mass goes for 7 hours i hear!!!!

the problem is you are making assumptions about the rest of us. You may only have 2 days . I have a far more balanced life which does not rely on public holidays to jam in what we should all be regularly.

danny, thats great. Besides the fact you quoted the wrong post.

I was talking about society in general rather than your house. Dont be so touchy.

It seems a lot of people cant stand the thought of just being with their family without some outside stimulation for 1 day. If we force them to, is it a bad thing?? Is footy the only importnat thng in our society. There's no footy on Good Friday. Our society has managed to cope for decades without it.

You met my family? I can't survive them without beer...

Really, I have absolutely no problem with this. For those who do, don't go. Don't watch it, spend the day with your family as usual. No skin off your noses.

So how about, those who want to spend Good Friday with their families, do, and the rest of us who want to watch the footy, do.

I'm sure there'll be shitloads of people in both camps.

What I am advocating is some social engineering. Force people to spend time with their families.
Used to be that weekends was family time. Now people work Saturday or go to activities for the kids. Sunday is spent at highpoint or Chadstone, like thats a great family activity.

For those with no kids Deano, you have to spend the day with Mrs Supremo or the Kaptain
