Top two Vic teams from the previous season should play on ANZAC day, why should the filth and the scum supporters be the only ones to get to hear the last post at a footy game etc.... Plus other teams could certainly do with the increased gate receipts from playing on ANZAC day.

On Good Friday, why not? could even make it a Friday night game or twilight and have RCH appeal tin shakers outside the ground. How many people actually observe good friday in a religious sense anyway?

Good Friday footy has been discussed a few times before on TC as well...

http://www.talkingcarlton.com/phpBB2/vi ... php?t=8185
http://www.talkingcarlton.com/phpBB2/vi ... hp?p=87092

The results have been overwhelmingly in support of Good Friday footy.

Greg Swann, your time is now!

Next year (2008) it will be a Friday and they are already talking about a Friday night match, possibly at the Dome.

Good Friday wont be a blockbuster.
Easter Monday is definitely more of a goer or Queens Birthday
You just won't get the crowds there on Good friday to justify it.

Does anyone know how the two teams that play NFL on thanksgiving day in the US are decided? Is it simply rotation?

Maybe there's something we can learn from our American Brothers (as opposed to deciding which wars to get involved with :(.. )

I agree with that!

The TV audience would be quite large on good Friday but the crowd level would be quite low...

Was thinking about this yesterday...has it fallen on a Sat in the last 12 years & if so can anyone recall how the AFL scheduled the round?

Anzac Day is the premier public holiday to hold a blockbuster game. Collingwood know it and Essendon* know it. Here is why:
1. It usually held in Round 5 or Round 6. At this stage of the season both clubs still have much promise for the year ahead and the big stage beckons.
2. It is the only game on the day in Melbourne and so it gets enormous media attention.
3. Given that it is in April the weather is usually fine.
4. On Anzac Day people have nothing else to do.

Good Friday will not work as well because:
1. It has religious significance and some people won't attend for that reason.
2. It is on a long weekend and a large percentage of people are away.
3. If it is in Round 1 or Round 2 then the whole round of games gets media attention, not just the one blockbuster game.

Easter Monday will not work as well for the above reasons 2 and 3.

Queen's Birthday will not work as well for the following reasons:
1. It is just one of eight games for the weekend and so there is less media attention.
2. It is in the middle of Winter and people are less enclined to venture outdoors.

There are no more public holidays to consider.

Anzac Day G gives huge exposure to the two teams. There will always be a crowd of 60000-100000 depending on the teams that play. The financial advantage is enormous. Ground receipts and sponsorship exposure is not equalled except for the finals. As it stands the situation is unequitable.

I went to the first two Anzac Day clashes in the 90's. Then I thought why am I supporting these two teams? So I didn't go after that. I don't even watch the game on TV any more. I couldn't care less. I found other things to do. My only care for the game is my tip and my dream team players.

My solution (as others have suggested) is that Anzac Day should be a replay of the previous year's grand finalists. That way all clubs have an opportunity to gain the financial advantage that Collingwood and Essendon* have had for so long. Supporters of the clubs will have a better opportunity of seeing their teams in action as the theatre goers of the grand final will not be there. It can be held in the home state of the premier team. If the game is outside of Melbourne then they can hold another game in Melbourne of the next two highest Victorian teams.

What do you think? It is easy and it is fair! All clubs get a chance.

Mallee you have put well thought out valid points, what do you think would happen if a petition was put to the AFL on that basis? Wouldn't take long at all to get 100,000 sigs, just go to games that don't have the filth or the scum playing. Would the AFL have to cave to the demand of the fans?

I think that the push needs to come from a number of areas:
1. The other 14 clubs
2. The media
3. The supporters
and probably in that order.

The AFL will more likely listen to the clubs before it listens to the fans. However, if there is a ground-swell of support from the fans then the media and the clubs will pick up on it and make it known. The media like nothing more than a new angle/a new story.

Wayne Carey on Monday night's LA Confidential expressed his strong view that the Anzac Day game should be shared amongst the clubs. He needs to convince others in the media to have the same view.

It is no good to say that Collingwood and Essendon* started it. So they should reap the benefit and other clubs should find another day. There is no other day. Collingwood and Essendon* have had their time in the sun without the pressure from other clubs. Now is the time to share it around.

So to answer your question a petition may be an idea. However, to get the best impact all of the other 14 clubs need to be behind it. Then you will get real pressure on the AFL to change it.

We won't know that until we play it.

I reckon a MCG game on Good Friday would be MASSIVE

Play it and let the people decide.

Exactly. The Kangaroos started Friday night football and that was subsequently wrenched from them.

Ironically, now it's Collingwood and Essendon* that get the lion's share of Friday nights.
