There are a couple of issues here.
1. I wouldn't be happy appointing a head coach who hasn't worked as an assistant for at least 2 years. Watson's 'failure' at St Kilda will make everyone wary of going down that path.
2. I don't think Voss would take a semior coaching job next year, even if it was offered to him. He's a smart bloke, and knows he has much to learn first. Plus, it's much harder to win the respect of a playing group when you haven't proven yourself as an assistant first, and Voss would be aware of that.
Buckley's special comments on SEN at the weekend were top shelf, up there with Lyon and Brereton's insicive analysis. Those three are miles ahead of anyone else I have heard comment on what is happening in a game.
I have no doubt that Maguire is having Buckley primed to coach. As someone else wrote, he has been to coaching clinics in the US already. Would expect to see him be an assistant somewhere for a couple of years, and all being well, senior coach at Collingwood after that.
As for Pagan, he may yet survive, if the improvement is rapid. Remember, his performance at North was amazing, both at under 19s ad seniors, so clearly he can coach to some level. Maybe having some quality assistants around him now is providing a more rounded coaching team, and may help Pagan. After all, coaching here is going the same way as it is in the States, the assistants are taking a greater role, and the head coach is more of a manager.
Having said that, I'd love to see a younger coach in there...Ratten may be in pole position at the moment.
One more thing...Pratt is often quoted as saying that if you are looking for the best person, don't look at those who are available...if they are available, they are not the best. Eade anyone? Worsfold? Roos??
Actually, makes for an interesting discussion. If you could have ANYONE as coach of Carlton, who would it be? For me...I'd probably go Eade actually. Think the two years in the media have transformed him as a coach.
