With all due respect BM, what other options do you offer? How do we recruit prime, topline talent to the club?
We need to maximise our return within the parameters the draft system allows. The system sucks and I hate it immensely. It encourages and rewards mediocrity. It is pathetic. But until we exploit for what it offers we are doomed to perpetual mediocrity.
The 2004 result was the worst thing that could've happened at the club. As I wrote elsewhere, I was calling for the club to aim to finish in the bottom reaches after the aints game last year. Fev, however, decided to be Superman against the crows and fired us up for the rest of the year (in patches). Then the worst thing that could of happened to the club did and we finished 10th, or otherwise known as no man's land. Footballing's version of Siberia.
Yep, instead of being in the mix to pick up a Franklin, Deledio, Tambling we picked up Russell. He might well be great but he isn't dux of class like the other three. If he was he would've been long gone by pick 9.
It isn't just the draft that we can benefit. Also the trade table. We have some extraordinarily BIG contracts coming to an end this year. We will have some serious money to throw around. We may not get all we want but we will cause some discomfort for other clubs in the process.
To me the equation is simple. Will we achieve the ultimate success with this current crop of players? The answer is no, so let's do whatever it takes to improve our situation. And BM, if that means doing the aints method, then so be it. It looks like it might be the most effective way about it!!!
The team that beat us last night by 12 goals has not had a top 6 draft pick for the last ten years.
There is more than one way to skin a cat.
