The 3 year offer is to join the Army Cadets!

Jarusa the whole KPP flanker debate is irrelevant while he's our #1 defender, surely? $210k if true is what, just over the average player fee, for someone who is thrown to it each week and in the second half of 2006 did fantastically well?

Youd have thought that he would be in our Top 5 resigniing priorities and sorted out before Round 22, or shortly thereafter.

Forget about what the others are earning. Thornton is worth about what we are offering him. Maybe pump it up by 10 thousand or so during negotiations. No need for stupid contracts. If he wants to leave for more money then go. He will be a loss but we cant be held over a barrel by players and managers. If he walks into the PSD his name will be mud forever.

Fisher is only worth $150 - $200 if he is lucky. He needs to get over his Patella tendonosis of both knees and get his kicking right before he can demand more.

Sure you guys think the Lappin Kouta contracts are outragous but that doesnt mean we have to sign two more ridiculous contracts.

On the basis of a media comment from Thornton and Fisher's manager, people are getting their knickers in a twist. If the manager's name was David Allison, we wouldn't even give it a moment of worry, and I'm certainly ot going to get concerned about this clown.

Get some perspective people, these two will stay with our club.

Whatever the final outcome I hope the club does not get stuck paying KPP prices for a player like Thornton.

In two years time Thornton should not even be playing a key position if we want to be a decent team.

He is a handy KPP at best but potentially a very good flanker.

We need other (better) players to come in and play the key defensive spots at the highest quality.

If another team is prepared to pay over the odds for him then set up a trade for a first rounder.

Hopefully, the days of this club being run by players and player managers are over.

I think you are selling tbird a bit short. The guy is good and getting better. He is a fine player and should be signed for 3 on minimum 300000.How do these guys feel when guys like Kouta and Stevo run around for double that amount and arnt accountable for their opponent. While the club were dealing with the Kouta fiasco, we should have signed these guys to decent contracts and shored them up.Kouta should have been given his marching orders. The club seems totally oblivious to common sense.Thornton and Fish have been the success stories of the club .A rookie and a pick 70 whatever in the draft are fine players. One has kept the defence together the toughest gig in the league and the club offers him 210000 for 2 years. That is a disgrace and all the future players should be given decent contracts. If guys like Thornton and Fisher leave it would further put the club into the shit.

IN SHORT THIS CLUB IS [REDACTED] AT THE MOMENT PURE AND SIMPLE.SACK THE BOARD SACK PAGAN BRING IN A WHOLE NEW BREED SO THAT GUYS LIKE THORNTON AND FISHER ARE VALUED IN A TANGIBLE AND NON-TANGIBLE SENSE.WHOEVER IS ORGANISING THE TICKET DO IT THOROUGHLY BUT QUICKLY BECAUSE I AND OTHERS ARE FAST LOSING ALL FAITH IN THIS CLUB.IT IS A BASKET CASE.SIMPLE AS THAT.

Sorry Verbs.

you are totally correct. if T/Bird was a bummers or Dees player, we'd be throwing money at him.
He is worth more than Kouta to this club and therefore, should be paid accordingly.

Its amazing how Melvey told us the youngsters all love Pagan. Yet it appears they're lining up to leave. :?

But we don't know what the superiority of the other deal on the table is. It could be $300,000. Superior means it is more than $210,000 plus it is three years. So why get all up in arms when there actually isn't any need to if you read the article properly?

I just don't understand this mess.

The salary cap is $1.2M. Kouta's backended contract has ended, and is now reportedly contracted for $300K for one season. French gone, Campo gone, 20 kids that would be on less than $100K, where's the room in the salary cap gone?

Fev $450?
Stevens 400?
Kouta 250? ...ends 2007
Whitnall 300? ...ends 2007
Lappin 250? ...ends 2007
Waite $300?

What's going on?

Synbad keeps harping on the money tied up with Kouta and Whitnall on our books, when it could be better spent on our future, but there's also other issues he raises too: facilities, development, culture....things are not well at Carlton. We need common sense to prevail.

If we are only now offering Thornton $210K, what have we been paying him? No wonder he's always cracking the shits!

I agree with this Knackers. What was he on over the last 2 years? Shit I don't want to guess. Great if we could sign him for $210K and I thought we could, but if he's worth between $250-$300 for us right now, and 3 years for a 22 yo, then that is reasonable IMO. FFS sign him up at $250-300K for 3 years.

Lappin and Kouta will definetely be gone end 2007; Whitnall will be due for recontracting (on less)...there will be heaps more room made available end 2007, and this should be considered in negotiations.

I'll be pissed off if Thornton leaves.

We've got to keep our good kids, and at 192 cm and 22 yo with over 50 games under his belt, Thornton is Gold for Carlton circa 2006-9. He is the future; but not god!

I'd like to know where all the money is going, and for how long?

Most arguments about players value is based on the on field performance, but I bet if we started to look at what they are all being paid, then this would put a different slant on the argument. Other times we discuss how a player is cheap because he didn't cost us a high draft pick, but have they cost us in another way?

Need to start a thread under Talking Players just focussing on the salaries and terms of contracts of each player, this would give posters a better perspective of each players value / burden to the club.

Thornton's ok - I'd reckon worth about 280 - 300 pa x 3.
Fisher is trade bait for mine; but worth about 200k pa x 2 if he can't be traded.

Your words are very comforting verbs, but it's still an issue.

Thanks. I feel a bit better.

Surely he'd like to have his name on a locker at the club.

I think a few peeps are missing Jarusa's point. He's not saying that Tbird is a hack that we need to let go. The point is, if we want to be a genuine contender in a few years time then Tbird's role should be the 3rd best defender, or thereabouts, so the team can better utilise Thornton's run and carry with the ball, rather than asking him to continually man up on someone a few inches taller and a fair bit stronger than him.

Tbird is important for us, no doubt, but so is finding some genuine KPPs to assist him in defence in the FB and CHB positions.

With the increase in the Player Payments some of these so called players Managers will be starting to test the waters in regard to what they can get.

The other factor is that we should not get into any more backended contracts at all.

i dont remember this logic when Whitnall was in negotiations Jar.
Thornton is more a KPP than Whitnall yet he's being paid half as much. :?

No doubt its the irrational inequity of the player payments that cause these problems.
Thornton should be paid according to his value to the team. Whether he is a true KPP should'nt be overly relevant.

Spot on Jack. We should sign both players to a fair deal - 3 years in TBird's case BUT we should tell his manager to SHUT UP and negotiate with the club and not the media. I am sick of player managers working through the press and I would be happy to lose anyone if they allow their manager to negotiate in that way. Every contract involves dispute, it's just that most don't get to the papers. Anthony McC should be told to shut the f&*^ up if he has his client's best interests at heart and the deal should be done quickly and quietly. At the end of the day I don't want to lose anyone but the club is always bigger than the individual and much bigger than the manager - and I would believe player managers as much as I'd believe anything Howard Bush or Rumsfeld said ie not at all, never.

I think it's Richmond and I think they're toying with us...remember us with Yze a few years ago? We made Melbourne pay through the roof for him - the Tigers are still trying to shop around Ray Hall in my opinion.

Tigers were keen on Thornton a couple of seasons ago - I'd suggest to Bret that he'd still be getting the #1 defender at Punt Rd seeing they have the Bowden bros. playing loose in defence.

Then again it could be the Bombers...if they poach Thornton - they could be trying to force our hand to pick Hansen instead of Gibbs.

I know that Essendon* rate him "very highly".
Not saying they have offered him anything but dont undervalue his appeal.
