For all the talk of Pagan flooding though Port always seemed to have much more space in their F50 than we did. So, either Port flooded pretty badly or they moved the ball inside their 50m too quickly for us. A bit of both I say.
Port nearly always flood back pretty hard, and then play their hard running chip-chip style going forward. They won a flag last year based on a very high skill level, a couple of power players (who can dominate regardless of team style), and the slight demise of Brisbane.
It's funny, but in recent times when we've played Port, Chocko has always come out in advance and talked about us as a flooding side. I've always thought it was a classic case of hypocrisy. I guess so long as you come out and say it first, the press (and public) will often believe it, regardless of the evidence.
Last night and the start to the year has been a terrific reward for one of the uglier styles of football out there. It could only have been improved, if we'd gotten one extra point (or they had gotten one point less)!
The only thing we haven't heard yet from him (and is another of his predictable refrains), was how the umpires 'cruelled' Port. I reckon there's a strong touch of the 'Sheedys' about Chocko. (Probably not surprising, given that he started out there as an assistant coach.) It's one of the many good things about Essendon* struggling. Hopefully it means we won't have to see too many Sheedy disciples getting gigs, and then having to put up with their ridiculous whining when they things don't go their way. You can bet Sheedy would have been pushing hard for video goal umpiring if last week's result had been on the other foot!
