Haven't seen any of the game but sounds like a great effort from the boys and I'm extremely proud. Remember the last time we played Port in Port? And the time before that? And the time before that (god is it just me or do we seem to play them in Adelaide every bloody year!)? Yep, we are an improving side no doubt about it.

I kept remembering that kick by friggin Burgoyne to bury us a few years back and I couldn't watch those two last shots for goal. Disappointed that Lade got that point, I was glad all our effort hadn't been in vain.

Has anyone had a good look at Lades point on replays etc? It looked pretty close to missing everything when I saw it on TV. Just curious.

I thought moving Lance down back actually improved the forward structure a bit.

It gave Fev a bit more room to move, plus sucked them all into focusing on him, meaning TLO/others snuck under their guard a bit.

Also Justin Davies - not much game time but did some very important stuff like chase & tackle when other guys began to run out of steam.

For all the talk of Pagan flooding though Port always seemed to have much more space in their F50 than we did. So, either Port flooded pretty badly or they moved the ball inside their 50m too quickly for us. A bit of both I say.

Best bit about T-Lo is he seems a pretty hamdy mark for his size, a la Brad Fisher. Will be interesting to see if Pagan ever assembles a forward line on the park containing the name Fevola, Whitnall, Deluca, Fisher, Longmuir.

Davies is a bit of a goer, if he could just string a complete match together. Patience camel, patience. ;)

I was watching Mark Williams for the Hawks yesterday, wishing we had a fast leading strong marking small forward like him. Hopefully TLo is the man.

I think last nights game and the results so far this round will give the players real belief that if they consistantly "compete fiercly" they can beat anyone in the competition. That's a huge positive.

He did a great job at CHB BM. I dont have no problems saying that....
I really dont believe he is our answer at CHF though and he is more of a floating forward or a FF.
He wont carve out a career at CHB for us.. so youd have to woinder where his future is if we are trying to bring in a CHF that can take pack marks and has real height.
Remember were not going to give away our early picks.
Remember he is now serviceable without being a star.... and he has got himself fit for the first time in a long time.
Matty Lappin said it best when he said .."Dont know what all the fuss is about Lance.. thats what he should have always been doing for us"

Again, sincerely i will say he did a good job at CHB.. better than he was at CHF in the first half.

Happy???

Long answer.. just so you understand what im talking about..i just try and look ahead abit and not at the obvious. (which was his last half this week)

Port nearly always flood back pretty hard, and then play their hard running chip-chip style going forward. They won a flag last year based on a very high skill level, a couple of power players (who can dominate regardless of team style), and the slight demise of Brisbane.

It's funny, but in recent times when we've played Port, Chocko has always come out in advance and talked about us as a flooding side. I've always thought it was a classic case of hypocrisy. I guess so long as you come out and say it first, the press (and public) will often believe it, regardless of the evidence.

Last night and the start to the year has been a terrific reward for one of the uglier styles of football out there. It could only have been improved, if we'd gotten one extra point (or they had gotten one point less)!

The only thing we haven't heard yet from him (and is another of his predictable refrains), was how the umpires 'cruelled' Port. I reckon there's a strong touch of the 'Sheedys' about Chocko. (Probably not surprising, given that he started out there as an assistant coach.) It's one of the many good things about Essendon* struggling. Hopefully it means we won't have to see too many Sheedy disciples getting gigs, and then having to put up with their ridiculous whining when they things don't go their way. You can bet Sheedy would have been pushing hard for video goal umpiring if last week's result had been on the other foot!

We played well, picked up from last week and more player stepped up. We played good for the amount of quality we have out at the moment, our backline tried hard. But we still need to play more consistant football.

If I hear one negative on this thread....

Well, I suppose I'm going to find out what you have in mind :P

My negatives are:
* I picked the Blueboys in the office tipping, but only get the same as anyone else who took the easy option. I reckon draws should be paid to the ones who pick the outsider
* I had $100 on Carlton to win by 1-39 in a double with the Cats by more than 17 points at odds of 8.15 :?

Damn that Wanganeen goal where the ball hit the ground on its side but still rolled straight thru for a goal. Damn that dropped mark by Johnno in D50 in the last couple of minutes that led to a point. Damn that free kick paid against Karl when it could easily have been paid to him.

But overall you have to say a great night. Fantastic to see Houla running the ball - shades of Shannon Grant with his use of the ball. The Wiggler possibly has turned the corner - what a great snap in front of goal, and heaps of intensity. TLo shows how useful a forward with kicking boots can be - even though he should have done better, and no doubt will. And Chambers showed that he won't be known (like Alan Thorpe) only for his Wiz Cup performances. Karl looked like a talented footballer again, even if he won't be the answer as a KPP for the immediate future.

What this performance showed is that we have lost none of the determination we had last year to rebound from a poor performance. The unanswered question is whether we can develop the ruthlessness to dominate when we are favourites. We'll know the answer to that against Hawthorn and Richmond in 3 weeks time.

Can i just say that Shepard by Davies which provided matty lappin to run the ball out side he back fifty and hit a carlton player on the chest was awesome, Davies does heaps of thw 1%'s and his also a smart ass which is good as it he backs it up by going on fairly hard.

Bowyer played well to took out heaps of opposition players in the stopages his a big boy and he knows how to use his strength.

The more I see of Davies, inconsistent goal kicking aside, the more I like. He could be a real tough nut for us if he continues developing and holding his place in the side.

No Campo......
No Scoland.....
Stevens playing off the half back line........
Kouta had a dog of a night......... and we drew with Port.

Wiggo kicked 2 goals and looked like a footballer.
Johnno, love his work in the tight stuff. If he had of kicked those 2 goals would have made his night.
T-Lo, every mark he took last night he was made to earn and held them.
Chammbers, on the bench early but his 2nd half was gr8.
Karl, took some strong marks and kicked the ball well.
Spron, better game than the last 2 and kicked a nice goal in the last.
Houla, all class.
Fev was alright kicked 4 and had a few possi.
Carazzo...............an attacking backline player, had 19 possi, 4 inside 50's, 4 rebound 50's, 2 thats right 2 clangers, kicked a massive goal on the run and hit targets all night. Sorry gezman but Carrazzo for brownlow.

There I knew you could do it Synbad.

Have always thought of Lance as a more 'floating' forward, he is not a permanent CHB, although his ability does stiffen that backline when he goes down there. Actually thinking about it, I would probably would Lance a comision to float between the arcs, going deeper both ways as the situation requires.

Personally I think we need to find a solid CHB before a CHF, I do think we are 2 talls short of being a great side

It's interesting to hear "Lance" and "floating" in the same sentence....

Greate game from Wiggins (darknavy might be right - he could be the Messiah)
Fantastic game from Big Barney. At last, we have a ruckman
Super game from Houla. How good was that crumb off the pack and run down the wing? It reeked of class.
Possibly Karl Norman's best game with the club.
Bowyer showed enough to suggest he'll keep his spot
Great kick under pressure from Sporn
Collingwood lost by less than a goal (that's got to be apositive in anybody's language)

I'm disappointed we lost but as Denis said "We're on track".

The biggest positive was the grunt/application/desire/vigour and self belief they showed for the last three quarters of the game. They wanted to be first to the ball, they manned up, and gang tackled, and protected their team-mates.

The rest fell into place.

Port came out pumped at the start, and with Kouta down back we got a bit lost. How many of you thought after the first 15 mins it was going to be a long night... and that we were going to get thumped?

The Blues showed fantastic spirit, and I couldn't be prouder.

Johnno was great in the packs, and was one of our best.

As was Wiggo. You can understand why Denis loves having these players in the team.

Outstanding game by Barney. his heart is as big as an oxes.

Houla and Fev played like the champions they are.

The only negative for me was that Eddie didn't get much game time, because T.Lo had such an outstanding debut!

WATCH OUT FREO!

The biggest positive of the night for me was seeing T-Lo in the navy blue, silencing all the armchair critics of the past few weeks. Good on ya son!
