Be a good deal for us, dont see whats in it for the AFL...and it wouldnt fit in with their long term planning of aquiring assets...

They are going to acquire TelstraDome in about 25 years, and there is talk about them buying SEN - with "The Spew" there is no such thing as long term planning, he just spends his time hosing down all the bushfires he starts.

I think the Spew is a lot smarter than we give him credit for and is planning on building up the asset base courtesy of the TV rights money...and when he leaves the job going out with a nice package of AFL shares that probably will have a false inflated value that he will make money on quickly...just a wild thought..probably wont happen....

Where's our resident accountant! This will have more to do with Tax and balance sheets than anybody's severance pay. It will probably mean that the AFL picks up the main lease which it can easily service and write off the lease costs on its massive tax bill whilst it offers some kind of friendlier sub-lease to CFC. Somewhere in here somebody (the AFL?) cops the depreciation write-offs but gains a large assett onto its balance sheet which may be important for any number of reasons (increasing the capital value of the AFL? Strenghtening the balance sheet? Too much $$ after the footy TV deal and they are looking for useful assets to invest some of that $$$ in?) Surely some primo real estate in inner city melb to redevelop into a world class sports training facility could be considered as a reasonable investment at face value.

Only thing that worries me is that we might be selling the farm to cover some short term cashflow problems. Asset stripping?

We dont own Princes Park we are just a tenant, paying most of the outgoings.

Better if the AFL owned it and they paid the outgoings.

Beware of (AFL) men bearing gifts.

Cant help but feel the AFL using this as leverage against us in future dealings... like forcing us to stay at the Dome past our current 10 yr agreement or something :?

Yeah that's be the worry, and the farm/cashflow short term gain scenario too.

Not to mention being told to move wherever the AFL pleased if they got tired of leasing the ground to us and wanted to build some units or somesuch.

So has this idea been floated around the club Synbad, or is it just an idea you've had? (It's a good one mind you, I like the sound of it.)

I'd like to see the detail if it is seriously being considered but it is probably one of the best thoughts I have heard for a long while out of CFC.

Not sure if it is relevant to the discussion but I have given some thought to Carlton being the home of all the interstate clubs when the play in Melbourne. You know how we always see Adelaide/Brisbane training in an open park somewhere? Well why don't the AFL designate that they use PP (for a fee of course)? Seem to recall reading an article last year which profiled the Dogs going interstate and I can remember being astounded at how much equipment they lugged along. Wouldn't it make sense to offer a turn key service with some basic equipmnt as well allowing the teams to travel ligher.

It's only a thought that needs more flrsh around the bones but for some reason this post has made me think about it again.

The AFL couldn't build units or anything like that, its not like Waverley where the AFL owned the land freehold- the Landlord of Princes Park is the State Govt or Melbourne City Council - it would revert to public space (which is what the local residents always push for - and what prevented it being a 45000 seat stadium in the first place  ).

Yes, but if they're the lesee they could simply fail to renew the lease. Sorry, I did jump the gun a little with the unit development theory, but the possibility of being kicked out still exists.

So this idea is going to go ahead or is just being thrown around the CFC board room?

Synbad likes to think of this as a "work in progress". God only knows what he's doing :P

My own theory is that it's part of what Cornuto's post is about.

So who was it that posed this hypothetical situation during the week? Inside knowledge ? or just Caro getting the jump on everyone again?
