Good luck getting the VFL team into finals with 1-2 AFL listed players who grew up in Ireland and have only just learnt to kick an AFL football. If Power could make that miracle work he would be courted by every AFL club looking for a new coach.
Also our VFL program is not as strong for non-listed (or ex listed) players like Box Hill for example or has the young talent coming out of it like Werribee has recently.
Do you reckon that's because we always overlook players in our own VFL team when drafting? Surely it wouldn't be too much of a burden to keep open one or two list spots each year to reward the best non-listed players. Might mean we have hte ability to attract better players because we are seen as a destination club which gets kids to the next level.
The only ‘promise’ for VFL players is that they get to put themselves in the shop window & play an AFL role. They’re not signing up to a wait list.
Our program saw off three successive captains under Power.
Won a final in Dan O’Keefe’s last season in 2022.
Flogged out of a finals spot in 2023.
Four games in 2024.
2025 we took a baker’s dozen listed players into early season contests against standalone sides & they treated us like witches hats. Jacob Dawson had 20 touches in the first quarter, on our deck, and Power didn’t even send the runner out.
Every time I heard him speak, it was like a remedial class. He’d would pause for an answer to rhetorical questions. Constantly waiting for affirmation.
He was uninspiring. Good administrator, good assistant. Not someone that should lead his own team.
