Those figures aren't good compared to previous years Camel.
Sounds to me that is the reason some articles have been leaked, again.
Most people are on the money.

We're on par with the dogs and tigers who have over 16k each.

Yes 15.5 is down a few thousand from last year at the same time. I have had a chat with a few SC members (i.e. people who pay the expensive memberships) who have not and will not renew.

Quite a few are MCC members who bought Carlton membership because of wanting to sit in the SC area of PP. With the move they do not see the point of buying the membership - and rely on MCC seating plus the discount they get at TD.

Others are just pissed off. Quite a few people opted for the "premium" seating for SC membership and were completely screwed (including myself) by getting terrible seats allocated and have spit the dummy.

If I can take my own example (I always renew in December). We went from best seats in the Heatley stand and great seats under cover in M12 at the MCG to pay $50+ bucks more per membership and a) got offered level 4 seats at MCG (we opted to stay in our regular seats) and b) allocated last row on the wing on level 2 at TD tucked under the concrete nearly on level 3 and having to bend down to the knees to see the scoreboard etc. We were pissed off and I told them so when I called them in December (05).

The good news is that we have been moved forward on level 2 at TD to Row E which wil be fine and got seats on level 1 at the G in front of the SC (Hassett room). Very happy with that.

However, I have heard that quite a few people were so pissed off with the seats they got last year (compared to what they had before at PP) that they have not renewed.

One of these guys has been SC member since 1974. I think a few people (especially those with premium / reserved seats) are disenchanted and might be amongst those not re-newing plus a lot with MCC membership who had additional Club memberships.

I know the seat issue can really piss people off - but even with MCC Membership (and I am waiting for mine  ) I would still buy a Carlton Membership for myself. Lets not go down the Melbourne Football Club path.

I can understand them being pissed off with poor seats however it sounds as though a complaint to the club will rectify the problem, as mikkey has experienced. If these people don't want to make a complaint to the club but rather sit back & bitch & moan to their friends, then the club is none the wiser & the members issues will not be addressed. It is disappointing that we don't have as many members as this time last year, hopefully a couple of wins in the NAB cup might change that.

I'll be getting mine on Sunday..

No - the key problem is the membership department. They are OK as long as you just re-new - there are always problems when something has to be changed. I have experienced it several times over the years.

And in regard to this years improved seating - we had to threaten to pull our membership and the ones of the extended family (7 premium seat gold SC memberships) before any action was taken!

Last year we had bought the new premium seating early December and were contacted only at the end of February (!!) to be advised that they could only offer level 4 at the MCG etc. When I asked if I would get a refund because we stayed in our old seats at the G ("standard" reserved) - there was a lot of uhm and ahm, and then they said they would send a voucher for the Carlton shop. The voucher never arrived.

The problem here is that the Club seems not interested in members who actually are long-term and buy the expensive memberships and spend money. We are a family of 3 (1 kid) and pay over thousand dollar just in memberships plus we go to at least 2 of the more expensive functions like B&F / Guernsey presentation etc. every year - so that’s another grant plus merchandise etc.

The guy mentioned in above post (SC member since 1974) used to take the whole family i.e. 5 SC Gold reserved seats memberships - and as he said "the club has no interest in me" - i.e. nobody rang to find out why he did not re-new his membership.

I could go on and on - but I am of the strong opinion that the membership department is under-resourced and does not have the technology it needs (they can not lock in seats when you do it over the phone – except if you just re-new existing). It also should not take 2-3 month to get back regarding seating requests and a smart club would look after premium members who pay a multiple amount of the base membership and also are more likely to spend money on functions etc.

All I can say is that if this is reflecting just remotely to how corporate’s and/or sponsors are treated - then I am not surprised that they are struggling to get the corporate seats filled and sponsorship deals signed.

This important area of the club (how you treat people who actually contribute with money) is IMHO neglected and the one area I am really unhappy with the Board.

Understand mikkey, but for a club who is so under resourced who has to manage 35,000 memberships - how can they be expected to contact those who do not renew their memberships? I get that he spends heaps of money etc, but if we are so under resourced then how is it expected that they can find the resources to do this? Everyone who is not happy with their seating should complain to the club otherwise they don't know what's going on. And if it means that they threaten to pull their membership then so be it. I totally agree with what you are saying, that they should be listening to these people - but these people also need to do their bit by letting the club know.

I work in a retention department for Optus & time & again I hear customers saying that we should have called them to tell them about the new packages etc that we release. However, with a customer base of over 500,000 & being an inbound centre it is not possible to do that, as much as we would like to.

Well, so the solution is to put more resources behind the department. I think the investment would have a very short pay back time.

All the gumph aside

Dont you think they would have to say this but would be internally planning for a fall in membership? The fans have bneen great to the Club over the past few years, despite the on-field stuff, but there has to be a limit to that support in some peoples minds, maybe most people's minds.

I reckon if the Club hits 30000 it will have done well.

Does anyone actually know the breakdown of our membership revenue in terms of silver, gold, social club?

I would of thought its not the number of members a club has, but the type of membership they have, obvously the more members buying higher value memberships being the ideal scenario, or am i wrong?
