Do you really expect Motlop to be delisted? I'd be annoyed if we selected a young player every week only to dump him at season's end. Complete waste of resources. I don't believe it's a sunk cost fallacy either; he's shown some good things in midfield and even in defence; perhaps his future is not in the forward line but I think he still has a future. I agree that Fog has probably run his race; he does certain things nicely but doesn't threaten. Depth/VFL at best. White and F Young have done themselves proud but will miss the cut.
Only opinions GE. I'd love it if he made small forward a winner for us, but I can't see it.
He was drafted with pick 27 for a small forward role. Is he the small forward we need? Has he got any tricks? Does he have enough speed for that role? He's a good tackler. Maybe he would be better off playing rugby, if that's all he does.
We have to stop being precious about him costing us pick 27. Can we get that pick back? If not, do we hold him. WE have learned tp let go high picks if they don't work out, pick 3, Dow, pick 5 SPS, pick 10 LOB....and so on. Its sunk. I doubt we can ever get anything close to pick 27. Maybe he can help us out with points for Dean is what I'm thinking, so we can use TDK pick for something we need.
As for giving him a game on a weekly basis...
If he wasn't selected as a small forward on a weekly basis, who would be taking his spot? We have Williams as a dangerous small forward (but he's often injured) Evans, White, Durdin, Fogarty, Fantasia, Young? Put it this way, he's been given opportunity ahead of supp players Evans White Young, and Williams, Durdin and Fantasia have often been out with injury. He's been lucky imo, and cost us the highest pick with the lot of them, so the pick no. has been respected and given every chance to succeed, so he's given plenty of chance, and accept his selection has been due to a lack of competition for his spot, given Voss plays a minimum of 3 small forwards per game and up to 6 week. Ofcourse he's going to get a game. We started season in round 1with 13 out injured, and last week we had 14 out. He's been lucky.
Motlop is great in the middle?.......when the ball is hit down his throat in space and then he's got a 3m advantage on any opponent. How often does that happen? Not much. Most ground ball is hunted by Cripps and Hewett, and they need outside speed and evasive ability. IMO Motlop needs silver service to work out in midfield and he doesn't hunt to win his own ball, and when he does he looks for a tackler to stop play. No creativity because he lacks speed of mind and foot.
One game he had 3 CC, but there's most games he's not been given one.
What role do you see Motlop possibly playing in defence and who does he replace? That's the big question. Could only possibly be a BP....in the VFL me thinks. Too many ahead of him.
Smith and Walsh are missing to midfield group next year. When they return from injury, so will Cottrell, and possibly Elijah. Cripps and Hewett are going nowhere. Ben Camporeale wants a go in there too.
Other than Williams, I don't know how or why anyone can be confident in any of our other small forwards, with the exception of Durdin, but his body is not reliable.
There's a reason we are still in the hunt for a smart, speedy small forward with tricks after a decade of trying: we've backed the wrong horse.
My money is on Motlop not offered a contract come years end. Lets see.
