Not sure that we will get any better candidates than vossy.
What nonsense. Who wouldn't want the chance to turn us around the way Richmond did?
Richmond made massive cultural changes to begin with, board level down. This was a club whose supporters regularly spat at players going down the race. Whining whinges for decades. At least we are not that. The did a lot to turn that around from a yearly "board room coup" type club with badly behaved board, execs, players and supporters to a club that embraced "family values", hard work over talent, and didn't tolerate rubbish from their supporters (even if they tolerated it from a few elite players from time to time). I dont have anything to do with the club administration so I only know what I read online, about millionaires nephews on the board for no reason other than nepotism etc etc. Hopefully Cook was brought in to end all that, Paddy seems like the real deal, not sure why she wasn't made (or perhaps didn't want) to take a greater leadership role when Sawyer was outed.
I think they also go lucky with the AFL changing the rules of the game a lot and Harwick and his team were smart enough to devise a game style and recruit a list that would play on at all costs. they never got pinged for holding the ball in their forward half while the oppo mids and defenders would get pinged for same all the time in the Richmond forward half. The AFL wanted to get flooding and deep zoning out of the game and Richmond had the list and tactics to exploit the rule changes and interpretations by the umpires to deliver the style of football the AFL wanted to see on the TV screens. to bad about players and lists that couldn't adapt or who suited tight contested footy games with lots of in an under. They also had a list capable of winning flags, clearly, but I don't rate them against the Lions 2024 list when you compare the two teams — player for player Lions bat way deeper, IMHO.
