No not surprised at all Rexy we know the TV rights are the be all and end all but it is just socially irresponsible to be playing a game and the round of games where it is obvious that diseases can be easily shared amongst players of the different teams so where is the OHS obligations to the players and then the wider social responsibility to the community when they come back into the community and infect others
No leadership no respect apart from for the almighty dollar

Can't they be tested and monitored on a weekly basis ?

Like it or not, AFL and sport in general plays a massive part in the functioning of our society and dare I say limits potential social unrest if it disappeared.

The AFL are doing everything but canvassing corona options.

All they are doing is working out with their mates at the tv networks is going about how best they can scratch each other’s backsides, so they don’t lose any bonuses.

My point is you need to play this strategically. Once you start the season you are locked in to ridiculous options like playing every day of the week just to play all 168 games (or however many it is).

1. Postpone start to Easter.
2. Spend the time reviewing matters calmly until then.
3. If still no progress or improvement postpone again.
4. Reduce schedule to 17 weeks and its fair to all up front. Just ensure that you only go to Perth, Adelaide, Sydney or Qld once.

Makes sense.

Sounds workable.

If/when the season starts, I think it's going to be okay if, after that point, the season needs to be cancelled altogether. And that's something that should be in the plans as a worst case scenario. By that I mean, just because the season has started doesn't mean a predetermined outcome has to happen (all 168 games etc).

These here are crazy times.

They have the template. FFS what are they waiting for.

Idiots in the AFL released the news of the suspension of both the NAB girls and boys under 18 competition before the meeting with the coaches/talent managers had finished.

Their mobiles were running hot with calls from parents and players inside the meeting.

Wouldn't be surprised if they cancel it on Wed night or Thurs morning.
Guaranteed to dominate the news cycle for a while then.

First 4 rounds stay as is. Hint hint! They'll try and play without crowds for 4 weeks. Dumb move if they do.

Like the 16 minutes per quarter idea.
Stop the fade outs we have.
I haven't looked at the stats but gut feel is we conceed most of our goals late in quarters

It's unfair to still be tossing up whether to play the match so close to it - will be very hard for players mentally.

Do we want the first 17 rounds or the last 17?

I am not watering down any argument about the dangers of the Corona virus, particularly for the elderly and people with weakened systems.

However let me just say this.

Travelling on a train in the middle of winter makes open air sporting events a pee in the ocean in comparison (with respect to the spread of the virus).

For Gerard Whateley to say that Football has to get in line with the rest of the community is just completely untrue and has not been thought out. People are still going to work, people are still nose to nose on trains, people are still going to supermarkets, kids are still going to school. I just don't understand why sport is being singled out.

If it was up to me I would stop everything for 3 weeks, suffer the consequences and start again.

Anyway ... I hope the game is played on Thursday. Winter is Coming ... and its only going to get worse. I would be very surprised if the season is not cancelled in the end.

Go Blues!

Players want to play on (of course)
Quote:
AFL players want to play this weekend.

A majority of players at tonight’s landmark meeting, convened by the AFL Players Association via teleconference with more than 800 of the cohort from around the country, supported a plan to kick off Round 1 on Thursday night.

The players were presented with a range of options that could have been available today but have united to play from this weekend if the landscape remains as it is today.

A lot can change by Thursday night but, at this stage, the season will kick off at the MCG between Richmond and Carlton.

There has been no resolution to the issue of pay, with the league having proposed players take a 20 per cent pay cut as clubs and the league desperately seek to cut costs amid the crisis.

A government health official was also part of the teleconference.
Pretty sure I can guess who's opinion holds the most weight.

Shame you aren't running the country....

Come to think of it, you should be running the Action Team which we still haven't set up....
Most of the current decisions are being made on stuff other than the reality of the virus....(AFL, Scotty, Dan)... THAT'S DANGEROUS....
Ask an Epidemiologist/virologist what should be done... And DO IT

Go Blues

AFL need Corona beer to step in as a major sponsor and make up their shortfall

Agreed re 3 weeks.
Agree with Whateley for the first time in a long long time.

Just the last 24 hours affecting my household:

School Camp suspended
Swans Academy suspended.
Local footy training and games suspended.
News Limited Head Office, staff forced to work from home next 2 weeks (for a start) as of today.

Its not about what govt is not doing and saying, its about what all the responsible types are doing.

Public Transport should continue with safety measures in place...face masks, personal space etc...the problem is the work force is forced to go to work, hence the nose to nose in trains.

Call the games off, lets stop the spread and geton top of this in 2 weeks or.....

134 people died in Italy over the weeekend.
Over the last 24 hours, a further 370 died in Italy.
Once this virus takes hold, everything will close down. Everywhere.
Then its on for young and old.

Short term pain, long term gain.
