Ratten took Carlton to Finals with a Judd led team.
Judd retires and Ratten's injury depleted Carlton team miss finals.
Mick Malthouse in media at the time suggested Carlton is a Premiership contender.
Mick's inuendo was he could take Carlton to GF where Ratten couldn't.
Mick Malthouse took Ratten's Carlton team from cusp of finals to wooden spoon.
Mick Malthouse had alienated the Football Dept, and tore the fabric of the club.
Mick Malthouse was sacked before his contract was completed, before he could do any more damage.
In Malthouse's time at Carlton, and under his watch, the experienced coach:
Lost Betts and Waite for nothing.
Kicked out Garlett and Robinson.
Yarran's health declines.
Henderson leaves.
Holman slipped through undeveloped.
Jaksch, Sumner and Gorringe recruited.
Malthouse broke a fractured club imo.
We hit the bottom of the barrel. Absolute Bottom.
What would you expect a Board to do?
Answer: Make changes to List, Recruitment, Development, Culture and Coach. Rebuild.
Carlton's rebuild is from a very low base.
Carlton's rebuild is very different to any other team.
No point comparing wooden spoon Carlton to Top 10 teams. Ridiculous thing to do.
No one wanted most of the players SOS, Footy Dept and Bolts discarded.
The best of those who were replaced by recycled players imo were Everitt, Buckley, Gowers and Bell.
All of them had question marks at the time. They wouldn't have made any difference to our current plight.
We chose to go to the Draft and trade players for high picks to gain quality players who will be around for our next tilt #17.
No one has seen such a huge turnover of players. Only wooden spooners would be the only teams to come close.
There's logical reasons why top 10 teams don't turnover their list as bottom of the ladder Carlton has.
It is a genuine rebuild, and we expected a lot of short term pain for long term gain.
I hate losing, but I can see why we had to rebuild in a big way, rather than pussy footing: clearly.
This is the last year of the 66 game rebuild. It is planned meticulously like never before (and I heard this from our ex CEO's mouth despite his bitterness being let go).
We have to see it through. Throw stones at the end of 2019 if we don't see a big improvement.
Lets stick together. Phat!
Very nice summation Bondi.
The one guy you didn't mention is Robinson. Based purely on his football I didn't think at the time we should've discarded him and I still don't. He's a hard nut and that could've been handy. I've never met the guy though and I get the impression that he's a bit of a peanut, so I suspect that was at least part of our motivation.
