His grandfather played 149 games
His father played 39 games.

If the AFL had an ounce of concern for clubs that's history dates back more than 20 years (ala not GWS etc) and an ounce of romance in their souls they would grant Carlton and (potentially other clubs) access to players that have the potential to add three generations of representation.

The history of this game is its biggest selling point, yet those at AFL House apparently don't see it that way. The majority of soccer clubs date back no more than 30-50 years in this country, yet Carlton dates back over 150 years. Even the EPL clubs can't match the 3-4-5 generation representation angle that clubs such as Carlton can offer.

Carlton 1864
Chelsea Soccer Club 1905
Manchester United 1902 (as Manchester United)

If only those in power could start thinking about the game in its heartland.

Imagine two players in the one team - Jack Silvagni and Patrick Kerr - who have both had fathers and grandfathers represent the club. Surely that would be a first in not only football - but any major team sport around the world.

Carlton should be lobbying the AFL to ensure that there is a grandfather-grandson rule if they have played 100 games...surely the history of this linkage is just as valid as a father-son rule....

If the AFL can indirectly assist Hawthorn get $35 million in their bank account via their little Tasmanian experiment...surely they can find wriggle room to get a ruling on a grandfather-grandson rule.

Blues should trade out the inconsistent 25-27 year olds like Casboult, Everitt, Tuohy, Kreuzer and get as many picks as possible and try and get Kerr. AFL won't change the rules, that's just a pipe dream. Get picks and tell the lad to advise clubs he only wants to go to Carlton for obvious reason.

We don't know if Tuohy is carrying an injury - same with Everitt.
Tuohy was All-Australian last year (AFLCA) and Everitt is our leading goal kicker.
So you can't be too harsh on those two

If the AFL had any faith in their own 'bidding system' there would be no problem with a grandfather - father- son rule. ...but there you go. I agree though, it won't happen. ..shame, an opportunity lost and it would be a good lead in for a "club-family" rule once you get mothers, daughters, fathers, sons added to the mix

Caroline Wilson 44 minutes into Footy Classified had a go at the AFL with their handling of the father-son rule.
Caro's Arrow -
"To every AFL lawyer, CEO etc commissioner who over the years have worked to strangle the father-son rule..what a muck you've made of it"

"On Saturday night anyone who had a heart could see the joy young Jack Silvagni bought to the Carlton Football Club. Yes, romance still exists in footy. Over the next few years if Carlton win a premiership not one, not two but three Silvagni boys will be playing in that team . That is if the club can circumnavigate the red tape that the men in suits have put around this once wonderful rule."

So yes, I agree. Getting the AFL to see the romance in a grandfather-father-son rule is beyond them when they are so keen to set up academies etc for other teams.

"We've had 10 changes to the father-son rule since it started...latest change that even pythagorous wouldn't understand"

Might have had Matthew Lloyd running around for us if they'd never mucked around with it and perhaps Brett Deledio as well if they'd relaxed the qualification criteria by 99 games, wonder what Caro would have said about that.

All the kid has to do is tell the clubs that after he saw Jack running around he wants to play for the club his grandfather and father played for and he will be seeking a trade after his initial contract runs out. The clubs these days want players who want to be with them. Shacshe (spelling) made it pretty clear he would end up at Brisbane one way or the other. It helped that they had pick #2 but I am sure it helped us decide between Weitering and him.

Remember James Cook? Told all the other clubs he would only go to one of the (then) big four in the draft. Unfortunately we picked him up.

It's too easy for players to start at one club and then just walk now. Not like the old days where they had to stay out of footy to get a clearance. Docherty is an example of one that favoured us.

What would happen if SOS got into his ear and told him to be seen out late at nightclubs, to get caught pissing on a window, to be seen smoking inside a public building and to threaten to kill some one with chopsticks? Nobody would pick him up.

So why did he last so long. Read somewhere his agility results were poor, anything else to it?

He lasted so long because there are questions as to whether his height, body type and athleticism will translate to AFL. Fitness and agility will determine that and you would have to doubt he could play any other position than full forward or the forward pocket. However he has the football brain and agression to make it and is the right risk profile at pick 65. We need patience and must except he needs 2 full seasons in the VFL with the odd senior game. 10 games in 2019 with the objective of regular senior football in 2020

Looks like a really solid 'V"anilla footballer - good straight kicking, good leading, nice hands.

Geesh I wish we had more vanilla up forward.
