I think that effort needs to be rewarded, and demanded. But furthermore, that we need to see if any of the players that have been lingering in the magoos have anything to offer going forward. Maybe the coaching staff have already established this, but a combination of these two criteria would keep me happy for the rest of the season. I'd rather spend the rest of this year, and the pre-season, getting excited about our next couple of years, than to see insipid 2 goal defeats that leave me wondering if we are going anywhere at all.
- Based on this, White would keep his spot if he has a role to play against Adelaide. If not, tell us he missed out because of match-ups although his effort is noted. - Everitt's lack of physicality has been tolerated while he was kicking goals and offering a target. I know he was moved around last week, but if KJ is in the magoos because of his inconsistency, or lack of 4 qtr effort, than we can afford to bring him in (like for like) and give him an opportunity to prove that he can step up, and keep a spot. - 1AW, thank you for 200 games, particularly through a really tough time. I think you've given your all and you are blue, through and through. I draw the curtain on his 2016 season. He's contracted for 2017 so would maybe look at putting him on ice and get him back across HB next year as depth. If he wanted a crack at a flag somewhere else, I'd give him our blessing. I'd bring Liam Jones in to replace him, until Harry Mckay is ready. - I'd bring DVR in for Byrne. With Tuohy and Simmo running the ball out, I'd be happy with a slower player with silky disposal by foot to kick us out of the back half. Haven't seen DVR play so I'm relying on what I've read but it was something along the lines of him being deadly accurate with his kicking, but a bit of a plodder? Give him some exposure anyway. If he makes a mess of it, then give Gowers a shot at that spot. - If White cannot keep his spot then I'd put Dick in (sorry, couldn't help it). He seems a similar type but hasn't had opportunity. Might be with due cause, but lets see. - With Byrne on the long term injury list, I'd elevate JGM and get some games into him as well (if he's ready) as a potential replacement for Rowe, who has been battling valiantly over the last few weeks. He could also be brought in for White if Dick is not considered ready, or replace Weitering if he isn't fit to play this week. - Tuohy has been serviceable but I don't think we should accept that anymore. I love him but would drop him and bring Buckley in. It might be good for them both. I'd give Buckley the role on Betts. - Daisy got 6 clearances last week, and led the way, but I wouldn't have known if i didn't read it. I barely saw him through the game, but must admit I only watched it once on Foxtel. I could have been distracted by the rivetting commentary [sarcasm]. I'd have him holding onto his spot by the skin of his teeth, but would keep him in for his leadership and grit. I'd have no hesitation in bringing in Whiley or Graham to improve our clearances, and sacrifice that outside dash that ends in poor disposal. - I'd drop Lamb and bring in Boekhurst. I've liked Lamb generally, but think that in a forward line that isn't kicking goals, things need to be changed around and that players need to realise they cannot become complacent. - Casboult is just such an amazing mark, but its just not enough. I think we need to look at what we lose as much as what we gain by having him in the team. Once again, I'm a fan, but I'd drop him and give Gorringe another run. This would ultimately be Charlie Curnow's spot when he get's fit, if Gorringe can't hold it.
So it'd look like this;
Weitering Rowe Buckley Simmo Ploughman Docherty Boekhurst Curnow Daisy Jaksch Gorringe Wright Silvagni Jones Sumner
Foll: Gibbs, Cripps, Kruezer Int: White, DVR, Phillips, Kerridge
Elevated: Jesse Glass-McCaskar named emergency to replace Weiters if he isn't fully fit.
I know I'd be dropping a lot of experience, but I don't care. I expect it'll be a loss anyway, but games into some inexperienced players (or opportunity) will show us all who needs to go at the end of the year, at the expense of some senior players who can't take us forward anyway, or become complacent through a lack of depth applying pressure for spots in the senior side.
_________________ I will always love this club, no matter what. But I ride the roller coaster like I'm in the front seat and the losses really hurt.
