watched Hamill interview last night -was still very coy about reasons he left carlton as usual suggested Elliott was part of it - which he probably was to a certain degree but didn't have an answer when Sheehan asked him about double the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ offered by Aints to go there :banghead:

- didn't want to discuss process saying he was overseas really tried to blame the viper Allison his manager - a good player who was seduced by the money and in the end was to his detriment

In any case didn't in the end play as many finals at Aints as he did at Carlton so his loss - enduring memory of Hamill after being told Blight was sacked him sitting outside at training almost balling his eyes out realising the mistake he had made

Gee, I wonder if there was any consideration for our best and fairest's opinion when we sacked the coach and brought in his nemesis in 2002. Poor Corey.

Carlton would have been such a wonderful place at after 2000.... He probably made the best decision.

You could tell in that interview that he was very sincere about his time at Carlton. I held a grudge at the time, but that professionalism had talked about at Carlton compared to St Kilda probably disappeared within a year of him leaving.

Just watched Dom's interview again.
Just reaffirms his standing as one of our top 5 of all time.....imo.
The segment about his son is heartbreaking.
Didn't realise he wasn't in the Afl H of F. Hopefully his is inducted one day

Still have no understanding as to why there's so much animosity towards Hamill.

He got offered twice as much to change teams and he did.

Happens all the time.

I loved him at Carlton and he'd just had a breakout year but this league hasn't been built on "player loyalty" for nearly 50 years.

Why is Hamill so special out of all the players who have changed clubs over that time?

The reason GWS is that he has never admitted that he went for the dollars but won't still 15 years later admit it
Wouldn't even admit it to Sheehan the other night 15 years later

Keeps making excuses for leaving it was what Elliott said at the best and fairest please if every Carlton player took offence at what Elliott said during that time we wouldn't have had a team

Even David Parkin who hates Elliott says the only reason he left was money and that Elliott wasn't the cause

Just be honest if you go for the dough ADMIT IT as you say everyone else does or did

Hope that clarifies for you. It's a bit like Carlton supporters don't like Grigg because he was duplicitous and many years before and still hamill isn't being honest but is duplicitous

My thoughts have always been that we didn't lose players, we got rid of players. The slap in the face that Hamill chose to leave Carlton was a dent to the carlton pride and psyche. Then when it all turned to shit 2002 and beyond, he became part of the reason it all turned to shit.

Still one of the funniest things I've seen at the footy was at PP playing the Saints in 2001 and belting them and seeing someone hanging over the fence at the Saints race holding out a $20 note for Hamill as he trudged off the ground :clap:

But Frank why should he have to expose every piece of his rationale for why he chose what he chose?

No player in the history of the league has ever publicly said "Yes, I'm moving for the money."

Buddy moved to get out of the Melbourne bubble. Abblett wanted to "start afresh". Judd wanted to "come home".

When did anyone move clubs and say they did it for the cash?

Why should Hamill be held to a standard that doesn't exist for anyone else?

I actually felt much better about Hamill leaving after that interview.

He spoke very highly about Carlton and came across to me as genuine when talking about the Blues.

Don't necessarily agree that players have never said that they haven't left for money scully said that the money was too good to refuse -ablett admitted the money was too good to refuse - going back in time both moore and templeton admitted that they left their clubs to go to Melbourne because of the money and Melbourne was also a rabble at the time -even Tom Boyd effectively admitted it when he left GWS the year before last

Hamill 15 years later wont admit it - Even those guys who don't at the time agree it was for the money admit it 15 years later

The guy is duplicitous and continues deception today

My take on it at the time was that Elliott screwed up by arrogantly saying no one leaves Carlton and then goaded Hamill. I got the impression that if Elliott stepped down from his high horse and offered a little more he would have stayed.

Elliot was a shocking no doubt but how many people/players do you think he did that to - surely not a reason to leave and others didn't - he did it to SOS at one stage saying during contractual negotiations he could go to Richmond and we would ask for Richo in the trade - did SOS or his manager worry about that - just laughed it off -no big deal

I reckon you're being pretty black and white on this for a guy who works in the grey areas Frank. :smile:

I don't think decisions like that are easy to make and whether or not Hamill's were made for the "right" or "wrong" reasons I don't reckon it would have been easy and I reckon the wisdom or otherwise of the decision will nag at him for a long time.

You can call him duplicitous but maybe there are a number of reasons he left and some of them he's not able to acknowledge even to himself.

I know someone who worked closely with him outside of football. There were three reasons he left.....
Money
Money
And more money.

Now that's fine, but he seriously overrated himself. That's what infuriated me, we weren't underpaying him, he just found morons that would give him more.
