Picked the wrong ruckman. Wood has the size and capabilities to hold his own at least against anyone even if he doesn't beat them. Always gives decent opposition in the ruck.
This.
Gorringe isn't solid enough yet. Goldstein held him off with one arm and then tapped it with the other.
I thought last week they might put Wood in and I think Gorringe was a poor choice for first ruck. I also thought they might have tried to shore up the defence by moving Rowe back, Touhy or Byrne forward and using Everitt as a marking forward with Gorringe.
North reminded me of Collingwood the year they won it with their swarm at the ball carrier. Most of our possessions were under pressure.
I don't know what the free count was but I thought we had the worst of it. Lindsay Thomas is a cheat in thatreard and the umpires should be made to look at the frees they give him for all sorts of reasons. The one in front of goal where he backed into Touhy and threw his head back and his arms in the air was worthy of an oscar. Goal.
I was a little disappointed with the margin at the end but they didn't fold in the last despite two early goals from outside 50 in the opening minute.
One of the big plusses for me was the presser. Bolts says it like it is whilst maintaining his enthusiasm and his positive outlook. The players would look at that and know they will be scrutinized but not crucified. They are allowed to make mistakes as long as they learn from them.
Another plus was White keeping Petrie quiet. Weitering was the only one who could match their forwards for height. Touhy did OK on Waite as well.
Another one was getting a lesson in taps to advantage. I know Jim says it is a made up stat but a look in the wash up at what a decent tap ruck can achieve is worth a lot. If Gorringe stays in next week, it can't be as a ruck, it has to be as a mobile tall forward, maybe relieving ruck at best. Rowe is needed in defence. So, Wood in.
And one more thing. If I were Bolton I would say, "After the game, you go to Waite and Henderson, shake their hands and walk away. No huggy smiley stuff. They abandoned this club and talked it down and they are no friends of Carlton and the playing group in the public arena."
Another big challenge next week. Wood in to give a contest so the Geelong mids don't get an armchair ride.
