I know it's uncool to revist the 1999 PF.... But......I've been to 7 of the 8 Carlton Flags 1968-95, only missing 1987 when I was living in the USA and sat alone at 3am in Boston doing a Blue Sombrero watching the game on ESPN.
Apart from 70 and 72, the 99 PF gave me as much joy as I can ever remember. Sharing that siren moment with my then 6 year old son. Absolute elation, tears of joy, hugging strangers, fist pumping, singing the song over and over.
Why? The game had everything. Arguably one of the the greatest Essendon** teams of all time. Carlton rank underdogs. Unbelievable Essendon** cockiness with supporters buying 99 GF caps outside the MCG before our game had started. Essendon** supporters already queuing up and reserving their spots for GF tickets. Carlton unexpected fast start, jumped them. Held the lead at half time. Could we hold on. Essendon** went bang in the first 10 minutes of the third quarter, our lead disappearing in a flash. Darren Bewick especially annoying. Essendon** cruising to a comfortable victory. Then the last quarter. Kouta the quarter from heaven. Forward pack marks, towering defensive marks. Aaron Hamill. Lances huge goal from outside 50 members wing. Drew Morphett. He's not confident, he doesn't think he can get the distance. The massive curling drop punt. Matthew Lloyds snap goals keeping them in it despite SOS's desperate lunges. Mercuri's miss from close range. The final heart stopping minutes. The Karma bus when that scum Dean Wallis tried to take on Dog Brown. The tackle of the century. On to Ratts then to Justin Murphy. Murphy''s jump for joy when the siren sounded. And then absolute pandemonium.
Remember it like it was yesterday. Probably highly exaggerated.
Me and my son were there.
I was at the MCG with my dad and my stepmum filling in for RickJ while he was in Boston filling in for me at 3:00 a.m. That's what TC is all about.
