We can't have someone who hasn't played at AFL level. Failed each time. Even if they're smart and know how to coach they just don't get the respect of the players.
Neil Craig never played AFL.
His SANFL coaching record was ordinary prior to landing the Crows gig. Did pretty well there but failed to win 2 prelims.
He was pretty unlucky in 2005 though. Got hit by injuries to Ricciuto & a couple of other guns before their prelim.
The Crows were awesome that year
Interestingly in those 2 years that Adelaide went close in '05 and '06 Don Pyke was an assistant under Craig. Another link was Trigg being CEO at the time.
Went on to pursue business interests and in 2014 rejoined the ranks as West Coasts stoppage and structure coach, and West Coast's midfield has gone from one of the weakest to strongest.
Usually in these coaching appointments the media have a daily wild stab at who is favourite, only for an outside "bolter" to get the gig.
We all have different views on what makes a coach, but from a forum point of view, and from everything I've read on here he ticks most posters needs.
Played AFL.
Played in flags.
Comes from a successful club model.
Has coached his own side. (Claremont).
Is in a current modern structure.
Has been at more than one club, and therefore less chance that's he just riding the coat tails of others work.
His time as an assistant at both clubs has conincided with on-field improvement. His departure from Adelaide conincided with an on-field decline.
Over here in Adelaide he is getting more noise for their job than ours so interested in what's the vibe about him currently in Perth, and is he a genuine contender?
