We can't have someone who hasn't played at AFL level. Failed each time. Even if they're smart and know how to coach they just don't get the respect of the players.

Neil Craig never played AFL.

Hmm, that's a tough one. Brawn over brains?

My money's on the fitness guy.

Yeah, that's why he'd be a perfect fit for Bolton.

Matty LLoyd just confirmed on FC that Simon was told he's out of the running.

His SANFL coaching record was ordinary prior to landing the Crows gig. Did pretty well there but failed to win 2 prelims.

He was pretty unlucky in 2005 though. Got hit by injuries to Ricciuto & a couple of other guns before their prelim.

The Crows were awesome that year

It's only because they didn't respect him that they got injured. Plus I heard it was an AFLPA directive to get its members to tank so the scab wouldn't win.

Does anyone know what kind of ego Craig has? Will he not impose himself too hard as director?

I was at a Carlton v Port Adelaide match a number of years ago and got introduced to Neil Craig by one of our city's leading sports journalists during the half time break. Craig was watching the Power as he had the Showdown the following week to contemplate. I could not be more impressed with the man. He was engaging, down to earth and treated me (a member of the public) as an equal in the conversation. I'll never forget the encounter. He is a truly decent guy.

So are you saying he was a more successful coach in the competition he never played in than the one where he played 300 games for 2 flags?

Interestingly in those 2 years that Adelaide went close in '05 and '06 Don Pyke was an assistant under Craig. Another link was Trigg being CEO at the time.

Went on to pursue business interests and in 2014 rejoined the ranks as West Coasts stoppage and structure coach, and West Coast's midfield has gone from one of the weakest to strongest.

Usually in these coaching appointments the media have a daily wild stab at who is favourite, only for an outside "bolter" to get the gig.

We all have different views on what makes a coach, but from a forum point of view, and from everything I've read on here he ticks most posters needs.

Played AFL.
Played in flags.
Comes from a successful club model.
Has coached his own side. (Claremont).
Is in a current modern structure.
Has been at more than one club, and therefore less chance that's he just riding the coat tails of others work.
His time as an assistant at both clubs has conincided with on-field improvement. His departure from Adelaide conincided with an on-field decline.

Over here in Adelaide he is getting more noise for their job than ours so interested in what's the vibe about him currently in Perth, and is he a genuine contender?

I wouldn't be unhappy with a Bolton / Craig set-up.

nah, sounds good to me.

i'd like to see all new line coaches, but failing that... especially a new ruck and defensive coach set up.

I'm always a little surprised at the absolute focus on current assistants. I would have thought the better model is to source coaches who are currently or have had success at being a head coach. Someone who's had experience in dealing with all of the elements of the role, not just the witches hats. Unfortunately we tend to devalue coaches in the WAFL/VFL etc systems. As Bucks said, "being a head coach is like being a parent. Being an assistant is like bring a grandparent".

Not that I'd be disappointed with Bolton as he would come from a very successful system. The question is whether this club would allow him to implement the changes he'd want. If not, then once again we'll waste time.
I just hope whoever it is is given 100% support for at least a couple of years.

Coaching your own side does get mentioned a lot as an important prerequisite.

Some have experience of both worlds ie Bolton was Box Hill coach before being an AFL assistant, and Pyke was at Claremont, before West Coast an Adelaide.

There was some talk that not coaching his own side may have counted against Lloyd, and lack of experience for Dew.

Clarkson coaching flags at Central Districts in the SANFL was his opening to being an AFL assistant and the of course senior coach.

I hope it's Bolton. Just for the press conferences

And yes I know that's shallow
