I suspect Everitt, Cripps, Gibbs and Murphy will all come up ok, but Armfield, Menzel and Jamison didn't look great.

Tutt has to be dropped. Can we afford to delist him this year? If so, do it.

I think Wood needs to be dropped for team balance; oh to still have Hampson on the list instead of Warnock.

Henderson to defence, as I've said most of the year, and he'll still probably kick 20 goals for the season just from drifting up forward. Might as well try Rowe up forward if we want to persist with White & Fields in defence.

Ideally, and assuming fitness:

Out: Tutt, Wood, Fields, Carrazzo
In: Docherty, Dick, Rowe, Walker

I don't mind the idea of trying Rowe forward and putting Hendo back. It's a bit of a desperate move, but Hendo certainly looks more effective in defence. I don't have confidence that Jones or Watson would do better than Rowe, and at least Rowe will consistently compete at either end. Rowe would have to play as 2nd ruck too, because Casboult seems to relish being left as a permanent forward. Wood unlucky, but for team balance he may need to make way.

Don't agree with dropping Fields for Dick.

Might need to get Yarran forward.

Assuming Jamo, Gibbs, Murphy, Cripps, Cripps, Everitt & Menzel are OK-

B: Simmo Jamo Fields
HB: Tuohy Hendo Buckley
C: Gibbs Cripps Docherty
HF: Bell Casboult Walker
F: Everitt Rowe Yarran
R: Kreuzer Curnow Murphy
Inter: Carrazzo Menzel White
Sub: Holman

In- Docherty, Rowe, Walker
Out- Armfield (inj), Tutt, Wood

I dropped Fields for Rowe and replaced Wood's spot in the side with Dick ('like for like' jokes will ensue no doubt), otherwise you're operating 4 talls at one end when Kreuzer is in the ruck. It's too tall; way too tall considering how only Jamison and Everitt can be considered as possessing elite speed for their size. We cannot afford to be that slow against any AFL side. Richmond exploited us last night for it.

Dick either keeps Walker out of midfield or releases one of our small/medium defenders into midfield/HF. Perhaps Yarran, perhaps Buckley, perhaps Tuohy. Dealer's choice based on last night really, though Buckley did spoil Deledio plenty while he was up forward.

Rowe starting the second half of the VFL up forward.

Do the club read TC on Sundays?

We need a developing tall forward and he fits the bill IMO. I also like the Yarran move up forward. It was a worthwhile experiment but he doesn't have enough defensive application or courage to play back. We also have sufficient dash and reasonable ball use down there now.

With all due respect to Jaksch's confidence issues, you could say the same thing about him, or most of our defensive group over the course of the season.

Fact is, if Jaksch isn't hitting the packs in defence, he won't have the stomach for being a forward, because no matter his guile (not much from an AFL standard for a forward) that's going to be something he'll need to do at times.

He's in the exact same boat as Henderson in my book, just missing about 6-8 kilos of muscle. Both are missing the ego required to be imposing key forwards at AFL level, and if they had it they would be spurring on their own education as forwards. You can moan all you like about development coaching, but like teachers, coaches can only take a player so far because without input from the player it's difficult to target a player's weaknesses effectively.

Any one can see their faults, but it's basically a fluke by the coach if the player has no concept of what information they're missing. Pack that in with the general and emotional intelligence you'd witness at a football club and what you're looking at is a cocktail for development on individual merit, unless you outline a very precise process that acts as a safety net rather than a leash and is well regarded by the players, who generally won't know what's good until they're saturated in the concepts.

But hey, let's appoint Barker.

Fair point, though I've been posting that for a month.

Been off with the pixies for over a week with some sort of virus that came at exactly the wrong time, but at least you're not telling me I'm off my meds, so a heartfelt thank you for being a rational human.

Well if that what the coaches are telling them, no wonder they are confused.

After the VFL, Jones definitely not in, KJ in, give Watson another go at some stage, he got nearer the ball then Jones. If Army is injured not sure where we get a small forward. Put Yarran in the middle and tell him to use his talent or advise where he wants to be next year. I'd consider leaving Wood out and having Levi as second ruck.

What is a game plan if not a framework for players to use as a platform to bring their qualities too, or something to follow without question? Different coaches have different ideologies but that's the fundamental choice they need to make. Barker isn't really putting in much of a safety net right now though, but I commend him on empowering the players to come up with novel ways to counter the opposition.

The more they're thinking about the problem, the better they understand how to execute solutions. Just need coaches who can get even more involved in that process, subject to them overloading the players' heads with info. Case in point: Levi's ball drop.

Well he showed me up as I was writing this by hitting some packs in the VFL.

Fair play to the kid, if he can keep doing that and does the hard yards in the gym, he's more of a forward prospect than Henderson is right now, but I rate Foster's attributes as a forward better than his. The rest is about coaching/educating/developing, and why I think we're a basket case in that regard.

Agree...playing too tall (and slow ) STILL!
Also think Casey should get a go

Freo have been pretty terrible the past month or so, they struggle to score like we do.

This could be a 60-30 scoreline

Wouldn't drop Fields. If the kid's good enough to get selected he should get 2-3 games minimum.

Geez I hope Tutt's got some rare virus that affects decision making and skill execution. And for his sake it'd better clear up soon.

Terrific to see Krooz back.
