no. you're outright wrong. he had personal problems, was depressed and received zero support from the coach, club and staff.

not sure if you've ever been in contact with depression, but pretty much everything – including playing footy – takes a secondary role and a big back seat in your life when it comes knocking.

all gartlett needed was support.

It's Carlton that made the decision to let him go. If you think the senior coach didn't have a significant say in that decision, you're having an Uncle Doug.

So Eddie himself, at the time of his signing, refers to being near his family (along with $ of course) as a key driver behind him wanting to sign there, and its unsubstantiated. ok, good to know.

Sorry, I'm interrupting the Mick hate. Carry on.

I don't hate Mick. I was actually excited when he was appointed. Gee was I wrong. I am just very disappointed in the way he has exited and blamed everything on others. IMO he gave up. Listening to him last night it was just full of contradictions.

Just more wasted time and money by this once great club.

So the Dee's are super sensitive supportive experts in handling depression eh?

Wonder how Mitch Clark fits in....

nobody is saying the dees are the shining light in player support. you're just guessing here.

maybe the dees did learn from mishandling mitch, and they now offer jeff something? maybe just a change of scenery and out of the toxic cfc environment helped jeff? who knows?

point is ... he was on our list and if we'd supported gerttles (see what i did there moshe?) he could still be here, and he'd be pretty bloody useful right about now.

I agree. i would have loved for him to accept even a small portion of responsibility for how messy it all became, that was clearly wishful thinking.

Let's face it, that's a cop out for people who don't have the capacity to debate the point. You're not interrupting the Mick hate, you're interrupting the logic with rumour.
It doesn't matter what the key driver for Eddie was. He was a restricted free agent. If we matched Adelaides bid, he stays.
What don't you understand about that. They're the rules. :screwy:

Wow, you know I had no idea how the RFA system works, thanks.

My point was - there were a number of factors behind both Betts and Garlett leaving the club. To throw it all at the feet of Mick now just smacks of scapegoating him for everything we don't like about the club, and every bad decision made by groups of people at the club.

Nobody made a deal about anything in regards to Eddie except Mick @#$%&! Malthouse.

He made up a bullshit story to reduce accountability from himself, nothing else

The weakest individual to be ever associated with our club, a quitter, an individual with ZERO credibility

Ralph on foxfooty post match said all our assistant coaches are out of contract this year and face a nervous wait.

Would be weird if Barker does an ok job as interim but gets the flick still anyway.

Wouldn't it be up to our new coach though?? He'd want to select his own assistants i would have thought.

we don't really know for sure, but despite numerous posts and references in articles on both players (Eddie for his dad's health, Jeffy lost trust of the playing group), we'll just blame the people we don't like anyway. Because we don't like them. Is that how it works?

No, the reality is Eddie would have stayed had we matched Adelaides offer. That's not based on unsubstantiated rumour like most of your post, that's a fact.

Were Carlton in a position to match the offer though?

If we had the capacity to pay Dale Thomas, I'd suggest yes.
It just came down to priority.

That's fair enough.
For the record I agreed with the club's decision to not match Adelaide's offer, it's a shame they chose to piss the cap space up against the wall by picking up a broken down Thomas.

And that's the point.
1. We should never have wasted the money on DT...BUT
2. If we considered the Adel offer ridiculous, we would have been negligent in overpaying Eddie as well

I don't know what Carlton offered and what Adel offered.

Would Eddie have stayed for some negotiated middle ground offer? If the answer is yes, then we f@## up

If Eddie wanted to be overpaid (based on our assessment of his worth), then we did the right thing

Regardless, big loss!!!

PS. For such a control freak like MM who does things his own way, why would he not have put more time into Jeff to try and turn him around if he rated him? As if he would've let Jeff go if MM valued him. As if he'd let the players decide who goes and who stays. MM obviously did not rate him high enough. The players not wanting Jeff was a distraction

M. Voss stating very strongly on 5AA a moment ago, he's not interested in senior coaching at any club. Family reasons and the taxing nature of being the senior coach doesn't appeal to him now or near future.

I'm equally interested who the assistants next year will be.
They're so important these days.

Stuart Dew is a no brainer

Look at the culture of success he comes from and is apart of.

Right age.

Get him in now.

His name is Stuart.

He won a flag with Port.

He ate all the pies.

He won a flag with the Hawks.

He ate all the pies.

He got a job with the Swans.

He wanted a job at Melbourne.

But the Swans wouldn't let him go.

He married a newsreader.

I have underlined the salient points.

A discussion on sen this afternoon about our next coach...

They recommend we go the young untried coach path.

AFL history apparently says we'll sakc him before our next premiership :sly:
