we don't really know for sure, but despite numerous posts and references in articles on both players (Eddie for his dad's health, Jeffy lost trust of the playing group), we'll just blame the people we don't like anyway. Because we don't like them. Is that how it works?
No, the reality is Eddie would have stayed had we matched Adelaides offer. That's not based on unsubstantiated rumour like most of your post, that's a fact.
Were Carlton in a position to match the offer though?
If we had the capacity to pay Dale Thomas, I'd suggest yes.
It just came down to priority.
That's fair enough.
For the record I agreed with the club's decision to not match Adelaide's offer, it's a shame they chose to piss the cap space up against the wall by picking up a broken down Thomas.
And that's the point.
1. We should never have wasted the money on DT...BUT
2. If we considered the Adel offer ridiculous, we would have been negligent in overpaying Eddie as well
I don't know what Carlton offered and what Adel offered.
Would Eddie have stayed for some negotiated middle ground offer? If the answer is yes, then we f@## up
If Eddie wanted to be overpaid (based on our assessment of his worth), then we did the right thing
Regardless, big loss!!!
PS. For such a control freak like MM who does things his own way, why would he not have put more time into Jeff to try and turn him around if he rated him? As if he would've let Jeff go if MM valued him. As if he'd let the players decide who goes and who stays. MM obviously did not rate him high enough. The players not wanting Jeff was a distraction
