Gold Coast. Its going to be a couple of seasons of getting hammered most weeks before any kids we recruit start to show they can impact on games so it
needs to be a coach who understands the reality of the job and its probably going to get worse before it gets better on field especially when Judd retires...
No doubt there's a bigger picture than just the senior coach EB. I wouldn't be worried at only McKenna putting his hand up publicly. It's only Round 9 and every other candidate has current duties as priority.
There's no doubt as you say our current situation would definitely rule out a "Clarkson/Lyon", and would make a Sanderson/Worsfold/Thompson - ex coaches who have stepped into other roles think twice about whether it's something they'd want to do again.
The best assistants in the land though should jump at it.
Remember when apparently no-one wanted to coach Port. Ratten "pulled out" of the running, Cameron chose GWS, and Hinkley apparently got the job by default.
Richardson took on a team that were tipped this year to not win a game.
Beveridge's mob an apparent basket case with players walking out.
None would regret the move. There is no situation unfixable.
Only B.Scott and Hardwick seem to be under any short term pressure. There's very few opportunities, and I'm sure the likes of Sumich and Royal would encourage those to take any opportunity that's offered.
There's no pressure for immediate success at Carlton. Sure you could end up ruining yourself for life ala Neeld and Watters, but chances are they would have failed anywhere and more than likely would never have been offered the job in the first place by a great club had they of waited.
On the flip side you have the opportunity to become a legend in the eyes of fans and general football public in possibly being the man who brings a once great club into the 21st century.
We will have the pick of the crop.
Great thinking post right there.
My sentiments exactly but better expressed.
