So if a coach doesn't want the job because he thinks we're too stuck up **** creek, then he probably isn't the best candidate for the job.

Good point, Em.

..you could argue that the smart coach will see us for the rabble we are (off field), and stay away..

Stuart Dew the buzz candidate for Carlton gig, but Matthew Nicks, I believe, also on radar. Very highly rated by Blues, snouts say

If we rate him highly then I'd say avoid, independent selection panel please, even my at my sons football club, we put together an Independent Sub-Committee to select the coaches, it might have been the local butcher, local baker and local website maker, but they couldn't be any worse than Adrian Gleeson.

Hello all,

I know this may be a touch premature, but as we are pretty much going to sack Mick Malthouse at the end of the year (presumably if we don't make finals) who will we install as the new coach?

Which coaches are in the running?
What coaching attributes should we chase?
How much should they be paid?
Should we try and steal a current senior coach?

No words of thanks to Dane for having the foresight to start this thread only last month.

You picked this Dane.

It's moderator type foresight from dane.

In other news. Bomber says "hmm"

Never a hope anyway. Dont want anyone that lost the passion once. This task is not for the half-hearted:

 didn't think anyone would pick it up \m/

thought it fit the situation somewhat

i didn't mind the album either , quite liked it

I also think it's a banger record, a good stylistic sidestep for them and pretty solid. Seems to be that the records that are a little different (particularly Divine Intervention and Diabolus In Musica) get the most hate and yet they're crticised for being "samey" across rhe majority of their records?! Ok...

Exactly.
A coach who can get the best out of Gibbs, Murphy, Menzel, Hendo, Docherty, Cripps, Casboult, Everitt, Hendo and Bell has a bit to work with.
I am not as half empty as most.

Gold Coast. Its going to be a couple of seasons of getting hammered most weeks before any kids we recruit start to show they can impact on games so it
needs to be a coach who understands the reality of the job and its probably going to get worse before it gets better on field especially when Judd retires...

No doubt there's a bigger picture than just the senior coach EB. I wouldn't be worried at only McKenna putting his hand up publicly. It's only Round 9 and every other candidate has current duties as priority.

There's no doubt as you say our current situation would definitely rule out a "Clarkson/Lyon", and would make a Sanderson/Worsfold/Thompson - ex coaches who have stepped into other roles think twice about whether it's something they'd want to do again.

The best assistants in the land though should jump at it.

Remember when apparently no-one wanted to coach Port. Ratten "pulled out" of the running, Cameron chose GWS, and Hinkley apparently got the job by default.

Richardson took on a team that were tipped this year to not win a game.

Beveridge's mob an apparent basket case with players walking out.

None would regret the move. There is no situation unfixable.

Only B.Scott and Hardwick seem to be under any short term pressure. There's very few opportunities, and I'm sure the likes of Sumich and Royal would encourage those to take any opportunity that's offered.

There's no pressure for immediate success at Carlton. Sure you could end up ruining yourself for life ala Neeld and Watters, but chances are they would have failed anywhere and more than likely would never have been offered the job in the first place by a great club had they of waited.

On the flip side you have the opportunity to become a legend in the eyes of fans and general football public in possibly being the man who brings a once great club into the 21st century.

We will have the pick of the crop.

Great thinking post right there.
My sentiments exactly but better expressed.

We can't; but there are people whose jobs depend on keeping certain conversations going so that no one notices they shouldn't have a job

So true. That idiot Stevo had Dew done and dusted yesterday. Today it's Nicks.

Happens every time. They'll throw every name out there so as to claim to be first.

Breaking: "As first reported by "______" on "_______" "_______" set to be officially named as Carlton coach this afternoon. Go to "_______" for full exclusive coverage.

Coaches in waiting: First nine selected for accreditation course (18 March 2015)

Quote:
After considering applications through February, the AFL has locked in nine coaches to start the level four course, which will become mandatory for those applying for senior positions in the future.

The nine coaches are:

John Barker
Brendon Bolton
Blake Caracella
Stuart Dew
Simon Goodwin
Robert Harvey
Adam Kingsley
Simon Lloyd
Matthew Nicks

I hope we get one of these guys. At this stage I don't care which one. They are the guys that have done the work as assistant coaches and been willing to undergo further training to be better coaches. They were selected to do this course. So they already come highly recommended.

They are the right age to earn respect from our players, yet still be recent enough players themselves (most of them) that they understand the modern game with its tactics and plays. Let's get this part right before we do anything else.

Good luck Barks. You have the first crack at it.

great read. Walls is a bit insular, in not calling out Rats weaknesses ie list mgmt, but a better club would have supported him properly and not let him make shit calls.

lets see if history repeats with next coach. i like walls call for a youngen .. cameron or burns....

I'll predict it now - damned if you do, damned if you don't. There's no way everyone will be happy with whomever they choose, exhaustive process or not. Haters will be haters, and from day squat they'll have the knives out for whoever is picked to coach because its not the person they believed should have been chosen.

One of the considerations must be - someone who represents the club well in the public domain.

One presser from Barker and there's already a better vibe around us. Mick drained any enthusiasm for members and supporters.

this times one hundred thousand million.

man, he sucked the life out of the place. half the members never embraced him thanks to his collingwood roots, and over time he wore out the other half with his pig-headedness and general crap demeanour.
