way too much hysteria on this thread.
For what he was brought in to do, malthouse failed and failed badly. If anything he is lucky to be given through to round 11 for a 'decision'.
As for comments about his wife/family - they are irrelevant. There have been very very few (if any) posts or news articles etc that have mentioned his family in a negative light. It's an issue malthouse raises on occasion as a herring, nothing more. AFL coaches are in high profile gigs and are extremely well renumerated as a result (too well) - pressure is part of the job. If it the family can't handle the pressure of a 500k-1mill/annum job, walk away.
Board was in a tough spot (self imposed). They could either
- sack mick immediately (and deal with the fall out of 'disrespecting a legend')
- wait till the end of the year (and lose $$$/members etc)
- or put a definite time frame on things as they have now (still going to cop flack but nowhere near as much as the other 2 options).
We all know the board is inadequate - however for all the bleating on here (particularly those that have connections/know people at the club), how many of you have actually done anything about it? (And no, I don't consider whinging to a board member/random at the club isn't doing anything about it)
See, I don't get the dissing of someone just because they are "well remunerated". What the hell does that have to do with it?
His record with us is poor. We know that. The club is in a diabolical state - not all his doing. Why is it that we get successful coaches to walk in our doors only to leave in embarrassment? Pagan, and now Malthouse. They are proven premiership coaches. Did they deliver the club squat, or did the club deliver them squat?
It wouldn't matter if we got Clarkson, Longmire or Ross Lyon right now. We'd still be bleak. But if you are going to terminate, then do it with dignity and honour. Not with ridicule and shame.
You might note that I havent dissed malthouse - just stated that he has underperformed.
The well renumerated aspect of it relates back to everytime mick (or someone else in the media) raises the issue of the impact that all the speculation has on their families. It is a non-issue.
Every AFL coach is extremely well paid - part of this renumeration is due to the associated media/supporter/club pressures that are expected should they not be performing. If you take the money, dont go complaining about all the pressure that comes with the job. If the coach was performing, there would be no/minimal pressure.
Riducule and shame? pffft....
Lets face it - there is no dignified way to sack a coach. The only way to have a dignified exit is for him to coach out the contract and leave at the end of the year - however in order to do so one of two things would need to have happened
- mick says at the start of the year that he intends to retire and this will be his last year
- the team performs well enough that there isnt the speculation as to whether or not he is the right man for the job.
Neither has happened. So given the above, what dignified exit would you have proposed?
